The New Zealand Warriors will make their first appearance on the Sunshine Coast early next year in an NRL trial match against Manly at Quad Park.

The Warriors will spend three days in camp at Kawana before playing the Sea Eagles who will be including Quad Park on their pre-season schedule for the second straight year.

They played the Melbourne Storm prior to this season, drawing almost 8000 spectators on a wet February evening in the first all-NRL trial to be played on the Coast in more than a decade.

Manly is also the club that has been in talks for some weeks about establishing a relationship with the Sunshine Coast Falcons FOGs Cup side

“We want to build on the success of this year’s game between Manly and the Storm,” Quad Park general manager Roger Desailly said yesterday.

“Plans are underway to enhance the level of spectator comfort and overall event experience for the 2008 clash, including a number of new corporate, seating and entertainment initiatives.”

The Quad Park Corporation hopes the game on Friday night, February 29 will attract a number of fans from New Zealand who will include it as part of a Sunshine Coast holiday.

“With the help of local tourism bodies and the Vodafone Warriors, we’ll put together a Weekend Vodafone Warriors Supporters’ Tour for league fans from New Zealand looking to sample the delights of the Sunshine Coast,” Desailly said.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the players and coaching staff were looking forward to coming to the Sunshine Coast for a three-day pre-season camp and the trial.

“We’d urge all New Zealanders living on the Sunshine Coast to turn up in force for the trial and make sure there’s plenty of support for the Vodafone Warriors,” he said.

Tickets for the pre-season game go on sale in early October.
