Sea Eagles set to take more NRL matches away from Brookvale Oval

MANLY hit the jackpot when they signed a lucrative deal for Brookvale Oval to be renamed Lottoland this year but the club is still battling to turn a profit at the ageing venue.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Sea Eagles are set to take a third home game away from Brookvale next season after four home matches this season failed to post a profit.

Manly have played 10 home games a season at their spiritual home for the past decade with two being taken away for commercial reasons.

They are likely to play only nine at Brookie in 2018 with Auckland or Christchurch joining Brisbane and Perth as Manly’s homes away from home.

Manly’s reduction in matches on the northern beaches is another blow for Sydney’s much-maligned NRL venues with Allianz Stadium under fire after a building assessment labelled it “a potential deathtrap ... ill-equipped to cope with a serious emergency”.

Sea Eagles majority owner Scott Penn assured fans the club wanted to play as many games at Brookvale as possible but they needed to find extra revenue to cover the financial losses.

“Next year, we may need to take more than the two games away, yes,” the chairman said.

“We are in a loss-making position at the moment. If we need to take more games away to make sure we are financially viable, so be it.

“The back end of this year (at Brookvale) had been terrific but some fans of teams don’t travel, therefore it doesn’t make it financially viable for us at Brookie. We have to look at alternatives.

“There would be two reasons for it. One is a financial reason, the second is to increase our supporter base. We love Brookie, we love a packed Brookie.

Reminded the club’s constitution states Manly must play 10 games a year at their Brookvale base, Penn said: “That is in place but it can’t be to the detriment of the company.”

@HappilyManly

The qualifyer of 'detriment to the Company' is not in the Franchise Constitution.

FC Members will need to vote on this proposal. It should be put forward as an annual deal and not a rewrite of the Constitution.

Meanwhile the Franchise can stop it's attacks on the FC and recognize their effort in maintaining the official records of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 1947 - :inlove:

Looks like football club members will have a vote on this at the Age. Ritchie knows the club can only do this with endorsement by the football club. Worryingly the club continues to lose money. I'm concerned that we make it harder for the team with only nine genuine home games with this proposal.

The penn's knew about the 10 game minimum before buying the majority of shares.

It's a worry that they'll cry poor.....the fc may vote on allowing it, then the horse has bolted. I dunno if it can be a yes vote for three years or something like that. Surely they have awesome business acumen that can turn the club finances around without taking the easy option of 'more games away'?

It's the classic takeover move. Run the target business down and take it over 😎 Ultimately the FC is just a shareholder.

If the NRL's plan of limiting football operation costs to 7 million from next year, how will the Owners claim that it costs more to run the place and need to come up with the shortfall

At the moment they can move monies around and claim it all as operational costs.

ZtC may be kicked off the gravy train by Greenturd as surplus to needs 😛

The 22.5 million meanwhile, is still unused :banghead:

Ztc on a gravy train??

Surely not!

I think the Penns only want about 6 games a year at Brookie and maybe this is the start of it all.

Why we haven't put forward a plan to spend the $22.5 million is beyond me.

I doubt we'll get anymore so might as well try to do something with that money.

I was hoping for a grandstand at the back of the hill like they suggested awhile ago but nothing has been said about that since.

If we take more games away, I don't think there'll be an upgrade. @:(

We need a Northern Sydney A League side playing out of the same venue, that would be the impetus needed!

Rugby league fans will get unprecedented opportunities to mingle with some of the biggest stars in the NRL when the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles come to Christchurch in June.

The Christchurch Casino will become the home away from home for the Sea Eagles and there will be multiple opportunities for sponsors and ordinary fans to meet their rugby league heroes.

Manly will play the Vodafone Warriors on Saturday June 9 at AMI Stadium, but will be in Christchurch from the Tuesday for a host of community events. Details around fan days, coaching clinics and school visits are being finalised and set to be released shortly.

The Christchurch Casino will turn their Monza sports bar into the Eagles Nest, the Christchurch headquarters for Manly during the week and fans will be able to purchase special tickets for match day that include a transfer to the stadium plus discounted food and beverages.

The recent success by the Warriors has triggered a strong spike in ticket sales for the match and match organiser Justin Wallace says all the early bird tickets have already been snapped up.
