Manly Proven Recruitment record

Looking over the years as a Seaeagle supporter....Almost every player signed has maintained or gone on to be Far better players.
The players who leave even dating back to Ron Gibbs and more recently Glen Stewart....have slid considerably.
Are Manly timing the signings we’ll, or simply bring out the best in players??
The only definite improver to leave the nest is Gutherson, who had limited chances due to injury.
Name a few others over the years and the career from that point...

Best culture, we've been severely underrated in our ability to improve players. It's all about Bellamy being god bull****. We'll see when the big three are gone

True but both Gutho and JWH were at the very beginning of their careers and were obviously always likely to become good players, we simply had no room for them at the time.

You'd be hard pressed to find many.. The only one I can think of is Matt Parcel. Still very early in his career though but doing good things abroad.

Not all signings are great. Look at th dog **** we brought in at the back end of Tooves coaching run.

We do know when to let them go though. No surprise players slip. Living and training on the northern beaches especially in the jewel of that crown, Narrabeen 😉 - That’s something Parra or the riff or anywhere else can’t match.

We cannot compete with the likes of the Broncos etc for third party agreements

Until they NRL puts a cap on TPA's the competition will not be a level playing field
Agree, but even then it would depend on where they set the TPA cap. If it's so high that full use is unattainable for the likes of the Tiges and us then it would be almost as bad as no cap.

Hard to think of too many who have left Manly & got better. Ivan Cleary, Mark Brokenshire, JWH. Maybe Mike Eden.

The biggest loss for mine was Awen Guttenbeil who was coming through just behind Beaver, Kosef & Gartner. When the Warriors came in for 1995 he went back home to NZ.

I think JWH was rated highly at Manly and Roosters made a HUGE overs bid that paid off (unlike the other 5-6 of these they make every season)....will still pay it as he was at 1 stage - the most intimidating, tough man in the game.
But looking in contrast at - Ballin, Hicks, Rose, Wolfman and now Sirro, Uate revival....and a key example....the T Rex who was a junior from Parra was simply a big body with potential, moulded into an International and a match winner - yes he was lazy and inconsistent...but the fact is he went to the Dogs as a player in Huge demand and career best form and that bit of spark Manly managed to tweak out of him, could not be reloaded at the family club, or by Des who took him at Massive $$$.

Great shot!! Almost sent for it in 2017 but I loved the hit and the emotion he showed after it.....also agree on Eden who I in mind, thought Cleary was just as good at Manly, but did not shine as much as they had more outstanding players. Nice Post !!

Phil Carey went on & did a fair bit at the Raiders? Grand finals I think.
Much as I hate to say it - this was due to being on the end of that ridiculous Raiders backline - Stuart, Daley, Belcher and Meninga who at that time, were so dominant Wright would be in the top 3 season tryscorers!! But ok - you get the points again mate - great work but you can stop now .......:wait: and give us more improvers to make my thread more valid....@;)

Mark Gerrard left Manly lower grades & ended up a Wallaby.
First few I paid mate - but starting to dip - many reserve grade league players go to union and play top level/ International....I think we had a halfback ....Sheen?? also played at Rabbits, who played for Australia almost immediately out of reggies in rugby league....would only want a few of those boys if they jumped code - Falau and few others.

Might have something to do or could be attributed to the type of playing style at the Sea eagles at different times as well and apart from some of the big improvers already mentioned , also could be included Glen Hall and Shane Rodney . Luke Phillips was maybe another example of a player who marginally improved at another club but there certainly have not been many over the long term to improve once departing Manly in comparison with the number of recruited players who did become better and improved players in Manly colours . Definitely a heap of players who went backwards once leaving Manly, quite a few whose form stayed about the same on both joining and leaving the club but it certainly is a noticeable feature on the considerable number of players who did become better players once in the Manly system over the years .

Jack Elsegood went well at the Rorters and so did Phil Blake at the Rabbids.

Phil Blake’s best form by a landslide was his first seasons AT Manly.
Sad to say, but IF Manly had won the 82 or 83 GF....or better still - both ....I think Blake would have gone onto be up with Manlys best ever players....he was the perfect example of a confidence player.
My first games at Brookvale early 80,s Blake would light up the field with dazzling runs and the best ever chip kicks to score.

I do find this thread interesting but there are many factors that play a role in outcome following the recruitment of players and their retention. Players mature at different ages, respond better to different coaching staff and will produce better results when within the right type of playing group. Human characteristics such as personality traits, ego and emotional issues must make the management of young elite athletes a very difficult proposition with a kaleidoscope of potential problems. Sometimes players stagnate and need a change of club to break them out of their comfort zone. I have gone through periods in my life where I felt I was in a rut. So whilst I agree we have done pretty well historically we should remember it is impossible to get it right all of the time.

Brett Sheehan is the name you are after. He played on one tour if memory serves. Didn't exactly set the world on fire.
