Tackle Five – Un-Manly Conduct
Still on the match fixing probe, and Sea Eagles boss Kelly let himself and the club down when the heat was truly on last week.
This column was in Canberra last Friday as Manly prepared for their clash against the Raiders.
A large contingent of media gathered outside the team hotel ahead of the customary game day team walk.
This column spoke to Trent Barrett and struck a deal with the coach. He'd provide comment on match fixing allegations and allow cameras to film the team walk. In exchange journalists agreed not to approach players for comment.
It showed Barrett's street smarts. He satisfied a hungry media pack and protected his players.
Before Barrett spoke, Kelly was contacted for comment on camera. Unlike Barrett, he was in charge of the club at the time in question – midway through last season.
Kelly was offered multiple opportunities to speak openly; a golden opportunity to jump on the front foot and address the concerns of Manly fans and the wider public. He refused.
Later that afternoon Kelly arrived at the team hotel. He spotted our cameras and sped off around the block.
He attempted to drive through a back exit, saw more cameras and again sped off. This farcical scene played out twice.
To have the CEO of a high profile organisation conduct himself in this manner is embarrassing.
Kelly eventually fronted at the post match press conference. He bumbled his way through a prepared statement before struggling to answer straight forward questions.
The entire performance showed Kelly is in desperate need of media training

After all this time in the job it would appear he's not only in desperate need of media training, it would appear he's way out of his depth.
He came very well credentialed, a mate of mine who works in the industry said to me it was a real coup to get him as he was purported to be "the next big thing", he then supposedly surrounded himself with some smart people.
BUT, you have to say that 12 months later you'd give him nothing more than a D- , he's sort of like "the invisible man".
During my years doing the MWTS I had a bit to do with Lowe, a lot to do with Mayer, and an awful lot to do with Perry, Lowe obviously wasn't a well man when he took on the job so lets leave him out of the picture but Mayer and Perry would be streets ahead of this guy with fan/member interaction and speaking with the press, Kelly may in fact be a better money manager (yet to be determined) but suffice to say from our perspective he's not doing very well.
