Manly great Anthony Watmough savages club over plan to offload juniors, women’s programs

Thought that it was reported some time ago that all N R L sides made some sort of a profit last season so funding or operating a more local based junior pathways system and identity surely would seem a more preferable arrangement instead of outsourcing or subletting a junior system .
Flegg seem to be doing O K present and the other rep junior sides at least competitive .
Just have to cough up the money somehow to match other Sydney based clubs promoting their juniors in at least on appearances , fairly successful formats

The Sea Eagles want to slash costs in their pathways system ...
How come our rich guy always seems to be focussed on wanting to slash costs, when for certain other clubs' rich guys, money is no object?
“I wouldn’t call myself a pathways expert, but I know a hell of a lot,” he said. “I understand it and other people don’t. That’s no disrespect to them, but they don’t...”
Very prickly comment from Mestrov, obviously a touchy subject?
"I have for the last four months made it my job to review it to come up with a model that produces NRL players.”
Great! That's what it's all about, after all.
Unless... it's all about slashing costs??

Hey - Manly in finals ... management controversy, club infighting - it's just like the good old days!

This is to Tony Mestrov and Mr Penn
A perspective view from a Passionate Manly Man
My quote could be too deep for both of them to comprehend

When you don't have the ability to innovate a way out of a challenging situation
you start to cut cost at the price of foundation

It is a very strange article and does seem to contradict what Tony Mestrov has said and done in the last two years in terms of returning to a focus of a junior system to local northern beaches juniors.

Penn needs to sell up to one of the Hong Kong property tycoons. The Hong Kong Sea Eagles. C’mon, you know it works… and a beautiful 40,000 seater Hong Kong Stadium for our home games. We could even take a vintage round back to a Brookie once a year.

Does that mean we would have the Guangzhou Workers’ Sea Eagles as our NSW Cup team?

Ideally we'd get both the Blacktown and Manly juniors all working together. So the best ones from each system make it up to the top level together. The best coaches and team officials as well.

From the outside looking in we are a business. Sometimes tough decisions need to be made that are going to upset certain people. But they are what's best for the business. Or in this case the club.

With the club on this. Rather than an individual person. Sorry.

Never be sorry for what you passionately believe feathered friend
We all want Manly to be successful and we all have different perspectives
I do not know of any club that cost cut its way into building a more powerful club

If Rugby Union can teach anything it's when a sport cares about the top team only and thinks it doesn't have to invest money into the under 8's etc. In a short period of time, it's close to dead.

Now What is the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, as a club Club it has a brand name, and it has a community area.

I don't think it's rocket science.

If you need to go broader than your community area. Sure. . But if your local community aren't wearing your colours, and the community's kids are wrapped in another brand name.

Your club is already half way dead.

This part of the article is interesting, Tony gets a touch personal with other people’s views here, the details would be good to know in what is driving this thought process, it’s a 360 degree turn on what Tony was doing with junior football when he came on board two years ago.
Mr Mestrov: “I know greyhounds!”

In all seriousness, it’s difficult to know what to believe.

Other than apparently saving some money, it hasn’t worked out too well so far.

This could apply to Manly. From a Malcolm Knox piece in the SMH, primarily about the cross-country code:

‘History has a great appeal for fans – it’s food for the soul and the engine of loyalty – but history can also bring the burden of factions, feuds, crippling grudges, horrendous toilets and other bad habits. In both the AFL and the NRL, many clubs are burdened by the very traditions they celebrate.’

.

^^Because if we had a pokie cash cow like Penrith or C-B, there would be another stream of money to throw around.

Blacktown Workers is not a strong junior club, and the NSW Cup connection has contributed nothing to us in 10 years.
Once again we have stuffed a chance to colonise the Central Coast, and incredibly we seem to be going backwards compared to Norths.
