Manly fans slugged with ticket levy

After reading this, how much longer can Brookie survive?

Manly Sea Eagles ticket prices at Brookvale Oval could rise due to Warringah Council’s proposed rent increase

BROOKVALE Oval match ticket prices could increase by $1 each under a new lease proposal to help Warringah Council maintain the venue.

Manly Sea Eagles will also be slugged an extra $25,000 in rent to use the oval.

The conditions were approved at Tuesday night’s general meeting as part of the final lease proposal to the club.

Sea Eagles officials have requested a new lease of only 12 months for the oval as they seek direction on the future of the venue.

The club’s five-year lease with the council expired in November and officials from both organisations have discussed the new lease in recent weeks.

The council finalised its proposal at the meeting, which included the rental increase and a $1 infrastructure levy to be added to each Brookie match ticket.

The Sea Eagles paid $348,484 to lease the oval last year. Club representatives could not be contacted for comment on the proposal.

The council’s resolution also included continuing to support efforts to transfer Brookvale Oval to a NSW state sports trust.

The Manly club has previously backed this move and called for state or federal government contributions to upgrade the oval.

It comes after the NSW Government revised its stadiums strategy and outlined plans to shift funding from suburban grounds to major venues.

The council has argued its funding of the venue is unsustainable, as ratepayers subsidise the facility by $200,000 per year.

The council has voted for a report on measures the Sea Eagles were willing to implement during the next 12 months that would increase exposure for Warringah.

“Warringah Council should really be considered a major sponsor of the Manly Sea Eagles,” Cr Jose Menano-Pires said.

“In the last few years we Warringah ratepayers have had little return for our sponsorship dollar. (The Sea Eagles) are a great brand and we should leverage it.”
