Manly eager to cut ties with Matai before transfer deadline

The dispute is sbout why they have to retire, not if they have to retire!

Whatever the decision by the NRL or any insurer (as if there is any doubt what that will be), neither Snake or Skivvi will be playing again.

I don't understand why Manly is making out that they can't be farewelled until the details of their payouts have been sorted.

A lot may depend on how we are travelling on the competition ladder around June 30. To player trade or not to trade that is the question.

Dragging out and nrl just want it to get to the end of the season and says bad luck Manly. If it was storm, rorters or the donkeys all would be fine and passed as the right thing to do for the games legend and We care about our people. End of the day we love Manly and the NRL give us no favours. No right but don't you love a rivalry!! Wishing snake and skivy a great send off absolute legends and many years of joy.

I can't believe that Snake and Matai are still not allowed to be medically retired.:swear:

Greenturd is digging his own grave with these subjective rulings on who does or does not qualify :fubar:

These players should sue the NRL for mental distress :wait:

At least they are still being paid, at our/Manly's expense. We and indeed Manly should sue the NRL for mental distress and exhaustion of patience :banghead: Enough is enough @

I think we can't farewell them because they are part of our current squad. They will be farewelled at our final brookie home game no doubt and if they want also at the GF. Probably just waiting in case we use up all our cap with injuries like previous years, we might need to call them back.

Not that it means anything guys, but I took the time to write Todd Greenburg on the matter:

To The Administration of the NRL & Todd Greenburg,

I write to you, concerning the NRL's procrastination around the decision making process, regarding the allowances available to Steve Matai, and The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles similar to that afforded by The NRL to Anthony Watmough, and the Parramatta Eels.

Whilst this submission / request by individual & club may be monetarily based, what The NRL obviously isn't considering in its tardiness, is the affinity said player had with the clubs very passionate fans, family members, key stake holders, and their want to farewell these club legends in a timely & appropriate manner (Brett Stewart included), befitting their status in the game & for the club / members.

I therefore implore Todd Greenburg to step up as a leader in the game, offer the same dispensation afforded the Parramatta Eels & allow the fans their God given right to send off these diamonds of the game , without the negative shawl of yet another hard edged anti Northern Beaches Greenburg decision making process darkening the experience.

As can be seen statistically, goodwill & NRL crowds are diminishing, attributed in part to affinity with players, clubs & fans widening. 100,975 fans attended games round one, some 13.8% down on the previous year, and the lowest since 1996, when only 30,198 watched just the four games played.

Todd, please have a sense of honor in your decision making process. Understand the implications. Let fans be fans, and send off two true club legends the right way.

Please don't provide me with a vanilla, stapled response from a fellow staffer. I'd love to hear your insight into your resolution & decision making process, and if you don't mind, that will be published publicly.

Looking forward to your reply.

Kind Regards,

Ryan Winter

Nice letter buy hope you aren't holding your breath for a decent reply.

I just don't like this 'medical retirement' stuff at all. It's way too open to rorting and far too subjective. If a club buys ageing players, or resigns ageing players, that's the risk you take.

Now of course there can be exceptions, and Alex McKinnon is the obvious one, but this thing where Parra buy Watmough knowing full well he is crocked (just to get Foran) well bad luck, that's the risk you take. And to be fair we resigned Matai and Snake knowing they had issues.....no problem with that. They should get their money, but to ask for medical retirement I just don't like.

But to attract Members you need the stars. Fans love their long serving players and every Club and the NRLHQ want to wring the last ounce out of these players.

The risk of them not lasting, is worth securing them to get the Fans/Sponsors watching them play.

I really think that instead of ijust medical nsurance, some smart Options Company could sell a put option with each contract.

That way if the medical Insurer rejects a claim, then the Club could call on the option and pay out the contract.

The NRL's argument is that they don't want Clubs risking bankruptcy due to player payouts.

Well the option idea would nullify that fear. :nerd:

All commodity Companies buy options to cover a downturn, the NRL's commodity are the players

That's a fair point, and yes we do, but that's the risk you take. Sure clubs may extend contracts of favourite sons to keep fans happy, but fans also want value for money as well. I love Jamie Lyon, but I was happy last year he decided to retire. I didn't want to watch him injured and ageing and being stood up by players with half his talent (which was beginning to happen).

I'd like to see killer, Snake, Ballin, Skivvy etc still involved with the club. But not necessarily as players now the other point is we also want to win games. And you do get to a point where decisions need to be made to move players on.

It means something to us @Ryan and good on you  We await a response with bated breath....but not holding our breath :wondering:

@Jethro is probably right - there'll be no verdict till 1st July, just because we're Manly :swear:
