MEET the man giving Marty Taupau a run for his money in the gym and making a play for the title of rugby league’s strongest man.

Manly forward Kelepi Tanginoa has forced his way onto Manly’s interchange bench for Friday’s round-one clash with Newcastle at a packed McDonald Jones Stadium after some impressive preseason performances.

“He has most of the club records — he has broken them all,” Sea Eagles teammate Addin Fonua-Blake said.

BENCHED: Austin out of Canberra’s starting side

SQUADS: Who’s in for Round 1?

Standing at just 180cm and weighing 103kg, second-rower Tanginoa has bench pressed 185kg but could “easily” push through the 200kg barrier, according to Manly’s head of physical performance, Dan Ferris.

He can dead lift a staggering 300kg and also completed a 260kg back squat just last week.

Tanginoa’s name is all over the Sea Eagles’ gymnasium honour board and left teammates, used to seeing powerhouse Taupau dominate in the gym, stunned.

Tanginoa could challenge Martin Taupau as league’s strongest man.
Manly have tapped into Tanginoa’s incredible natural strength, partnering him alongside 190cm, 112kg monster Taupau in the gym

Ferris believes Tanginoa, who played 17 NRL games for Parramatta and North Queensland before joining the Sea Eagles last year, could surpass Taupau’s 190kg bench press.

“Kelepi is our strongest now, pound for pound, he is a powerhouse,” Ferris said.

“He could have a 200kg bench press easily if we pushed it.”

Fonua-Blake added: “He won’t tell you the truth, I think he out-lifts Marty. Kelepi is the best in the team for lifting weights.

“He is strong, powerful and fast — he’s a big block of units. I know he could lift 200kg easily.”

Having failed to lock down a regular first-grade position, despite debuting for Parramatta in 2013, the Sea Eagles believe they’ve found the key to unlocking Tanginoa’s potential.

“He is the type of athlete you can’t put a limit on,” Ferris said.

Tanginoa joined Manly midway through last season.
“From day one he turned up and absolutely ripped in.

“Him and Marty go back and forth and push each other — it’s been great for Marty to have some competition actually. We have pushed them both this year and Kelepi has shone through. He has increased his strength and his fitness.

“Marty is definitely one of our strongest but right alongside him now is Kelepi, who has a natural strength but also trains well. He had that raw potential, we just had to capture it.”

Tanginoa, 24, told The Daily Telegraph he was driven in the gym by Taupau.

“I like to train with Marty a lot — he is so strong, such a big bloke,” Tanginoa said. “He pushes me to lift more and we keep each other competitive. He is the strongest in the NRL.

“I have lifted 185kg. Marty lifts the same, maybe a bit more. I have tried to knuckle down this preseason. I feel as fit and strong as I ever have.

“Strength plays a big part of our game in the middle. You have to have strength and power. It’s vital. I pride my game on running hard and tackling hard.

“It would be good to run out against Newcastle. I want to take this opportunity. I have been on the fringes of the NRL for a couple of years so I haven’t ‘got there’ yet. I want to take it with both hands and go all out.

“I want to prove to myself that I deserve to have a spot and to show my ability. I want to do my thing. I just want to rip in with a bit of heart, that’s all that matters to me.”
Power play all the way with kappow and Tangi

I liked this quote the best

We have many talented young players with that hunger in their belly and our coach denies them for an opportunity by insisting on a player that is way past his prime in Brown .

Baz's only short coming imo, thankfully it's his last year.
Could you imagine this forum if he was upgraded?

And Matt Wright. Give Parker or Tom Wright a go...or even Anderson. I understand his dilemma. Do I play it safe or do I risk trying out these young much more talented players perhaps before their time. Tough question. I think to start he is playing it conservative with Brown and Wright, as both players are fairly safe options without having any special qualities. I suspect he'll gradually risk the younger players as the season progresses...and hopefully early rather than later.

Yep, and despite what others are saying it’s wise to go the safe option for round 1 , in my opinion!

I can understand where your coming from but IMO Brown and Matt Wright are not the safest tools in the shed either . Instilling belief in some young talented players can make them stand 10 feet tall but I guess we will never know which of those players will rise until Brown and Matt Wright retire at the age of 40

I know tooves only gave the "4th reserve" 10 mins or so... I think Des did as well?

Don't other coaches use all their bench more?

I agree, its round one, these guys were there together a good chunk of last year. Coach knows what he's going to get out of them.
Despite being against serial spooners, it'll be quite the hostile atmosphere on and off the field, so you want as many playing that can block that out and do their job.
They'll certainly know its their spot to lose. Throwing a (or a bunch of) young kid in first up at this time of the season where everyone is on adrenaline high, you don't want to smash a kids confidence round one if it doesn't go to plan and especially if you have the experience there in your squad to avoid doing that. Most teams use their whole squad (and then some) in a season these days, so their time will come.

That's a fair point. First game of the season can be nerve racking, even for many of us. So I can understand TBaz line of thinking. Plus Brown is extremely level headed and won't be easily put off his usual game. Another mediocre performance ...

Kids gain confidence when you show faith in their ability and give them a shot in the big league .

I agree with you Bozo...you should read what I say about the Aussie Cricket Team...but that's another story isnt it...or is it...well where was I. Yes I agree with the sentiment, but it does appear that coaches are usually loathe to risk young players too quickly, especially if there are a few at a time. I suspect it wont be long before there are changes...now what was I saying about cricket again?

I have a different approach to the wrap them up in cotton wool grand mothers style safety first aid care .
I believe in the baptism of fire where boys are given an opportunity to turn into men .
If young man are old enough and tough enough to go to war for Australia at 20 years of age then they are old enough and tough enough to go to war for Manly in the NRL
Tell a young talented player that you believe in their ability to get the job done and they will rise into another level with the confidence you have instilled in them .
These young guys are gutsy tough footballers and not netball players and would do anything for an opportunity to run onto the field in game one .
Which one of them would say no to a NRL opportunity ?
We all certainly have different views on here and that is what this wonderful forum is all about . 😉
