Manase

Saw this and it also shows the motivation of the other brothers re contracts (not that I can hold that against them at all)

Yeah whoever that recruitment officer was that said he is Cameron Smith in a bigger body, needs to find another occupation…and not because Manase wasn’t going to be elite, but his game is nothing like Cameron Smith. They’re completely different styles.

His running game was elite, also had an offload. We played a lot more through the middle back then with AFB and Tapau at the peak of their powers. Manase and Api would split teams up the middle and Turbo would support.

Gee it was good to watch. I wish we went back to that style and found some good middles.

Literally the one and only season I thoroughly enjoyed watching, and was proud to support, my team since the back end of 2014.

We had top 4 defence (until the last few injury-riddled rounds), tough and gritty, while blasting through the middle of our opponents. Just good footy. I thought it was the dawn of a new beginning... how quickly everything turned to sh*t

In one off-season, Api left, Nase criminally charged, Thompson near life-ending accident, Jake misses entire off-season. Shortly after, 6-again rule introduced, foiling Des' blueprint - who happened to be on some hectic pain medication all year, AFB leaves a little later, Dylan wife issues, pizzagate etc, and a season later rainbowgate lol. Mysterious CEO departure, Fulton clan exit, Turbo always injured, Des sacked and replaced with a wooden spoon coach, Schuster and Fainu issues etc, awe inspiring recruitment, now DCE's public embarrassment. Lol you couldn't script such chaos, bad luck, and poor management, if you tried 🤣

Yes, bring him back, the best part of ten years since his last serious game of football.

Throw in the baggage too. You know, the brothers, the money grubbing family, the (now banned from Manly-Warringah dealings manager), etc.

What could possibly go wrong?

Yeah he also linked really well with Tom. I recall a game against the Eels at Brookie and he was picking up and running on every second ruck and causing all sorts of drama. It was a great style and very effective. He had a huge engine too. Never seemed fatigued.

A lot was said about Sam and Latu but from what I’ve seen, Manase was the elite talent. The others look good without being elite. They may end up there but in a very short period of time, Manase was in the top 2-3 hookers in the game.

I have to say, he always struck me as arrogant and had a tough guy persona. The same one that put him behind bars…not good for the club.

Arrogant, tough guy, aggressive ... qualities applauded in rugby league but not in social world. Manase also had that charge about filming sex without consent, he was let off but it gave a clue as to his lack of respect, at least as far as females go.
Some here were slamming him for that incident (@Ryan from memory?) but I think I was inclined to defend him (young stupid etc) so in hindsight, credit to those who picked him as a ratbag early on.
I don't think stabbing someone in the back can be put down to having a bad day, it shows seriously bad values to me.

Sounds like a 'Days of our lives' episode.

No excuse for some appalling conduct but thought i saw one report where Manase was diagnosed with some abnormal or part abnormal behavioural tendencies and that was before the church incident .
Again in no way to downplay the magnitude or serious nature of the church incident or other reported instances .
Actually thought that his on field playing mode was just of a solid competitive nature and certainly could be wrong but can never recall him even getting sin binned .
Well above average 9 when he was on his game and will always unfortunately be regarded as a wasted talent .
Even if was not convicted , still had that very concerning and reoccurring shoulder injury in terms of getting better so no assurance that he would have had a clear run on the injury for Manly if he was not sent to the big house

A true showing of just how good Manase was, is that nearly everyone agreed at the time that it was the correct call prioritising him over Api.. who after leaving played in 3 grand finals, won 2 and played a number of times for NSW. And I genuinely believe Manase was close to, if not already a better player than Api despite being 6 years younger and having only just played his first full season in first grade.

We've made a lot of dumb moves over the last 10 or so years but this one stung the most as it was completely out of our control. Especially since we've put up with subpar play from dummy half ever since and it also eventually led to all of his brothers leaving, all 3 of them would definitely be pretty handy for us right now.

I know Samuela plays on Ola’s side but he could’ve been earmarked as a 12 and could the pair could of been our edges for years to come. Also adding that starch and aggressive attitude we have missed. Sione has come along too, good prop rotation and until latu injured his hand was going really good as a 14. Watch this space I think he’ll be elevated to the number 6 sooner rather than later and make a real go of it too.
