Penrith rugby league star Luke Lewis has spoken out about a cancer scare that rocked his family.
Speaking to Nine News, Lewis said his injury sustained in Round 19 of the NRL was far worse than expected.
A lump was discovered by accident when Lewis went for a CT scan on the back of his neck after injuring it in the match against Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium.
Tests on the lump revealed he had thyroid cancer.
The Panthers star underwent two operations to have his thyroid removed and was given the all clear earlier this week.
Lewis's surgeon recommended a further five to six weeks on the sidelines after the surgery to avoid contact to the neck area.
The 29-year-old said that he will make a full recovery and apart from having to take medication he is expected to live a normal and healthy life
