Stewart won't play before the semi's if at all this year. 

He has torn the scar tissue off the cartlidge in his knee which formed from a previous operation some 18 months ago. 

As a result he has little cartlidge between the bones in his knee and is basically bone on bone. 

Yes but you can now regrow bone cartlidge, which would make sense why he is out for a couple of months and yet was still able to run.

You can either a) regrow it or b) trim it (if there is enough leftover and not too much damage). Regrowing it is a longer process and longer recovery.
