Knights sound out Farrar for return to home club

CLASSY Manly utility back Ben Farrar said he would consider returning to Newcastle to play for the Knights if he was unable to secure a new deal with the Sea Eagles.
Off contract at the end of this season, the 23-year-old Western Suburbs Rosellas product is yet to re-sign with Manly, who play the Knights at EnergyAustralia Stadium next Monday night.
Knights coach Rick Stone and recruitment manager Keith Onslow have discussed the idea of trying to lure the Newcastle-born former junior back to the club, and have gone as far as sounding out Farrar's manager, George Mimis, about that scenario.
Farrar said he was negotiating a contract extension with the Sea Eagles, who he joined midway through last season after 2? years at North Queensland.
"I'm not quite sure what's happening there at the moment," Farrar said.
"It's a bit up in the air at the moment - I'd love to stay here, but I don't know what's going on.
"We're in negotiations so . . . hopefully I'll get something sorted in the next few weeks."
Asked if he would contemplate playing for the Knights, he said: "Yeah, absolutely mate. I'd consider anything, but I haven't seen anything yet."
Farrar played schoolboys and juniors with Knights Jarrod Mullen, Cory Paterson and Scott Dureau, and Penrith halfback Luke Walsh, before joining Parramatta in 2005 then moving on to the Cowboys two years later.
"He's a player off contract and obviously he's got some links to Newcastle. But we've been linked to most people around and we haven't spoken to him at this stage," Stone said.
Manly media manager Peter Peters said the Sea Eagles hoped to re-sign Kiwi Test centre Steve Matai, possibly by the end of this week, then would turn their attention to retaining Farrar.
Playing at fullback since round three as a replacement for injured former NSW and Australian representative Brett Stewart, Farrar has started all 18 games for Manly this season.
In his 69 career appearances for the Sea Eagles and Cowboys, he has played mostly at centre or on the wing but has also played a handful of games at five-eighth.
"He's certainly someone that has been discussed, many, many times . . . and he's someone who will continue to be discussed," Onslow said.
"We've spoken to George Mimis about him but there's probably a couple of other irons in the fire, with regards to a centre position, that we're still weighing up.
"That includes the incumbents, and there's still a bit out there. But Benny has been discussed, he's a local kid, and he's playing good footy for a good footy team."
Not for the first time when contacted by the Newcastle Herald to answer questions about one of the players he represents, Mimis did not return a call yesterday.
