An aspiring NRL player who took legal action against Manly for allegedly reneging on a contract extension has reached a settlement with the Sea Eagles out of court.

Promising back-rower Jordan Latham was seeking damages from the club in what shaped as a landmark case for what he believed was a backflip on a deal which prevented him from pushing for an NRL debut.

I think the issue here involves the change of coach, as opposed to any widespread problems with contract management.
There was a offer made in writing and it was accepted, pending the formal contract. Toovey was gone and the club walked from the deal. The player is clearly left out of pocket and during a period late in the piece making it difficult to find another club.
In managing the Toovey situation poorly, the club failed to address the recruitment questions that were obviously at play over that season. Perhaps they shouldn't have lied about Barrett being on 'gardening leave' and uninvolved in recruitment, when it was obvious to all that a deal was done.
It created a black hole in management that saw Jordan caught in the middle.
He deserved to have he case heard and good luck to him moving forward.

It won't shift the landscape too much because most contracted players that get pushed out get moved to another club. Hiku, Gutho, Ballin, Buhrer, JSL, yada yada. Those guys got the punt but they also were given a landing spot. Not many contracted guys get punted cold.
