I judge a man more by character than by playing ability. Johns may have had plenty of the latter but he fostered very little of the former.

Let's hope he gets out of the spotlight he supposedly hated. I for one am sick and tired of eulogies to a drug taking manic depressive.

Really?

You don't seem to like Monas very much, and didn't he win an award last year for all his charity work? Seems to me you have things around the other way when it comes to him :blah:

Given his penchant for squealing to the media every time something doesn't go his way, my views on Monaghan's character (or lack of it) are well known.

Plus, escorting a celebrity cripple (who has become the symbol of working mother's guilt) in a helicopter hardly qualifies him as Mother Theresa.
:violin: :violin:

Matt - You saw his outburst on television. This wasn't a one off. He thought he was above the game. Then all the Union rubbish. Then the ideal with him breaking up with his fiance because he was a "ladies man" to put it nicely.

Only an imbecile would judge a player's character only by what was done on the field - and vice versa.

Example - Hoppa - animal on the field - one of the loveliest blokes to meet off.

Again - Hearing Matt Johns drip honey everytime Newcastle are mentioned, then having to times that by 2, is enough to make one regurgatate.

Think outside the square Matt.

ryan do you plant to call everyone who disagrees with you an inbecile from now on?

It was a general comment Fluffy. And no, not everyone - just those that make stupid comments ! :cop:
I ould call MYSELF an imecile at times....we aren't all perfect Fluffy.

I enjoy rugby league immensely and apart from Dally Messenger no one has done as much for the game. No one has grab the league and basically owned it through their talent like A. Johns.

That was a pissweak reply too Mata.. It takes more than escorting a crippled kid across a footy field to receive a charity award and Monaghan has shown more character than majority of the blokes in the league.

His status as an immortal will be judged entirely on his on-field actions, as it should. I, for one, say make him an immortal next week.
This is all that counts.

How he conducts himself off-field is completely unrelated & should be left as such.

If we accept your logic then the exploits of Bulldogs in Coffs Harbour and players like Mitchell Sargeant are of no consequence and not worthy of the headlines they generated.

None of the Immortals behaved as prize prats and bought discredit to the game on the scale Johns has.

Nor do any of the Immorrtals have the taint of drug use hovering in their closet.

I smell another Irwin/Brock/Monas crusade coming on......

You are correct in stating that I don't accept you gloss over glaring failings simply because someone is dead/retired.

And just how do you judge this 'character' mata ?

Am assuming it will be through 3rd hand reports and what is dished up in the papers ? Best way to judge someones character is to spend time with them and judge for yourself

Also, other than yourself, and possibly Ballin in your view, how many people in their lives are perfect ?
Some may argue that it shows plenty of character to forge a top line career for 14 years continually in the spotlight while suffering from manic depression

KE

Involvement in betting cartels
Suspected use of steroids and illegal drugs
A string of failed relationships
Constant selfish clashes with officialdom.

Not exactly what you associate with the term character for the average 33 year old.
