Very sad news with former Sydney Roosters and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles half Johnny Mayes - winner of 3 straight premierships in the 1970s - suffering a massive stroke today. Lovely fella - thoughts with him. #NRL

He was built for Speed like The Road Runner
I was 12 when he won a Premiership for Manly in 1973
I will Remember him and honor him for his Great Manly Premiership Wining contribution A Life time .

Manly is a Great club because of Great Manly Men like Mayes

From my memory (and I may be wrong) but John "Monkey" Mayes (ha ha that hasn't aged too well!) was Kevin Junee's understudy at the Roosters. Manly poached (of course) him and he shone.
Roosters said,
"Hey what, give him back!"
So we then did a swapsies with Junee.
Both were very good players.

Like I said, my recollection but I may be wrong

Won 1973 GF with Manly & followed it up with GF wins with Roosters in 1974 & 75. 3 in a row. Not bad.
