Manly has entered a congested race for Penrith firebrand Jack Hetherington as it looks to fill the void created by the departure of Addin Fonua-Blake.
Hetherington, who played for the Panthers last weekend but has had been on loan at the Warriors for much of the season, is in high demand after being given permission to source interest across the NRL.
It is understood the Warriors and potentially Canterbury are also in the mix for the aggressive prop, who has one year left on his deal at Penrith.
The Panthers are loath to lose him, but don’t want to stand in his way if he can find a club where he has the ability to play regular NRL football.
Manly offer just that opportunity now that Fonua-Blake has gone. While he spent time at the Warriors this season, it is understood they are resigned to missing out on Hetherington because he has a desire to remain in Sydney.
That leaves the Sea Eagles and the Bulldogs to fight for his services — Canterbury may hold a slight edge because Penrith assistant Trent Barrett will join the club next season.
Barrett has worked alongside Hetherington at the Panthers this year. Manly, however, hopes it can persuade him to Narrabeen, where a potential partnership with Marty Taupau would be made all the more interesting given their recent history.
Hetherington was charged with a grade three careless high tackle last month for a shot that knocked out Taupau and left the Sea Eagles prop with short-term memory loss.
While Fonua-Blake is one of the game’s best front rowers, he was also chewing up a significant share of the Sea Eagles’ salary cap and his departure has given the club the freedom to make some signings capable of giving them a more rounded roster.
