Yes for those of us fossils who remember tonight was cracker night...
Catherine wheels, sky rockets,thunders , bangers etc.
All up about two weeks of build up to this event. Building bon fires ( setting light to other people's early).
My day was playing footy in the morning, playing with mates till 5 then watching last Sunday's replay of countdown and the Saturday footy replay on the ABC.
Then BOOM.......
Showtime.
And trying to nick some of dads KB cans undetected.
Gold.. cold gold !!!

wow, I hadn't thought about cracker night in years.

Was really annoyed when they stopped it (I was still a kid and there wasn't anything dangerous about them.)

I wasn't the rapscallion Harvie was... but I enjoyed setting them up...and letting them go, and if you were lucky...the damn catherine wheel wouldn't get stuck first spin around!

I swear one of you sat in front of me in the Ken Arthurson stand last night. I'm quietly sitting there with a mate, and someone walks along our isle, to find his seat, and realises his row is the one in front, so he throws a leg over to climb down the row, and smashes me in the shin with his steel cap boot.

As the tear came to my eye and I winsed in pain, I thought to myself, which one of you bastards is it, and took the opportunity to lay the boot in, literally 🙂

Try explaining cracker night to young boys these days and they sit there wide eyed and incredulous..."you did what ??.... lit big fires and set off lots of explosive devices ???.....not fair, when can we do that ?"

It was mayhem though, looking back I'm surprised there weren't more injuries. Very few of the crackers got used in a manner for which they were intended. Light the touch paper and stand well back wasn't so much a safety rule but a challenge.

A kid that was a year below me at school lost an eye in a cracker night accident. Shocker.

Remember the "parachute" crackers ?? with a roll of gaffer tape these became the IED of choice for letterbox destruction.

The lead up was good as well. You'd finish school, go down to the local wog shop and buy as many of those fireball shooters. We'd sit on the roof and take pot shots at cars and pedestrians......as mentioned, how there wasn't more accidents is a miracle.

Though there were some horror stories I saw way more carnage from bikes & skateboards than I ever did cracker night.

Yep I can't wait for July 1. My wife is a doctor and has had to work the past few years. She sees a few presentations in emergency each year. Keeping the dogs inside is the main issue. So much fun letting off crackers in the street with all the neighbours and a couple of drinks.

You can only purchase and use on the day and in Nhulunbuy anyway it's only charities and sporting clubs allowed to sell them. It's such a good night.

And just to rub it in southerners I've caught a 5.2 kilo blue bone at the boat ramp this morning, had a dip in the pool. And....

As good as coral trout. They are crustacean eaters so have a beautiful white crayfish tasting flesh.

We used to through cherry crackers at each other in the neighbourhood in Moresby.

One year Mum was busy with bandaging the right hand of the whole family ,as a bad batch had the crackers explode in our hands 😱

I got out of a test the next day, the pain was worth it
