The '47ers

When Eagles are silent Parrots begin to chatter
I can never get my head around the fact that when I went to school in the seventies and eighties, kids used to sit quietly in the classroom and for the most part, listen to the teacher and do their work. There was no ADD, no ADHD or any of that other stuff... no amphetamine tablets to calm us all down... aaaaand we somehow managed to get by. There was less violent behaviour and sexual assault... and much more respect for authority. When did this ADHD phenomenon explode into the education system... and why have suicide rates increased in such high numbers in the Western world when there are all these super dooper psychotropic drugs and anti depressants so readily subscribed to help prevent self harming and mental illness?

As a teacher, it really is a case of if a boy wants to go outside and run around, there must be something wrong with him. Drug him up!
We don't have many medicated kids at our school. We do have plenty of extreme behaviours and I absolutely don't think the answer is giving them drugs. That's a cop out.
The trouble is we just can't let a kid go out and let off steam without supervision. At least in Primary. Too much trouble for a teacher to get into if a child is unsupervised for even small amounts of time.
One of the things I hate most in my job is telling kids to get down from trees. We have really great climbing trees and I believe the kids should be up them. I'd be up there with them. But of course it's not allowed.
Being active and having ownership of their own decision making, being able to play a bit rough and take risks would eliminate a lot of behaviour problems for active kids imo.

I've taught at some primary schools where the students hardly ever get a chance to participate in physical education. The teachers that do take their classes out are basically looked down upon. Boys are becoming increasingly frustrated/angry and, sooner or later, society will pay the price. But nobody ever talks about the lack of male role models/gender diversity in primary schools as it is politically incorrect to do so.

Sometimes it's the hardest but best thing to do. There are always genuine cases where the meds are needed. And they offer great help to those kids.

Before I get into the more ridiculous stuff, I visited a primary school for some community work and got to talking to some teachers and the Principle, I was blown over by their approach to the kids with the backing of the school community. Across the road from the school they have an oval which backs onto a semi bush land setting, the Principle of the school supported by the teachers actively encourage the kids to get in there and play, make cubby houses etc, the teachers supervise of course and their are boundaries to what they do but I tell ya the looks on those kids faces were priceless.
Apparently they also take the kids that tried hard (not necessary the best and brightest but the ones they felt put effort in for the week re homework and behavior) fishing on a Friday afternoon for a couple of hours.
The Principle said, since they introduce these measures the classroom behavior and results had improved substantially, so much so they had to double up the buses because the kids even ones that had issues were wanting to be part of it.

It was fantastic to see, and I guess the point being we don't always have to rely on meds, taking a risk and getting back to common sense basics. (I would say innovative ideas but this example is just what we use to do before liability became a problem) can go along away to helping these kids and the teachers that have to deal with them.

Wow I can be serious ? I surprise myself
No back to dribbling...............................

@ManEagle has done well @Woodsie top contributor @mickqld gets an honourable mention @Wombat64 a sterling job

And boy I’ve talked **** the last week.

I’m sure there’s more

I am humbled, I am honoured, I am absolutely stoked to receive such an Honorable mention form King Dribbler... I humbly accept this mention not for myself but for all the Splitters and NSD who have created such an outstanding pool of dribble while we wait for #next which is #thisweek announcement.
I am a mere spittle in a huge pool of dribble and this honour should be shared among all dribblers .......

Im all for realising education standards have gone backwards of recent times (70s - now), however, its a fair stretch to compare primitive philosophy too modern science and try compare the IQ.

I challenge any average 1900s student to have an education let alone complete a modern one.
The study was of 750,000 people.

I'll take something out of that.
