Most likely last contract of his career - you can not blame him for taking a big pay day

I really hope he stays, such a legend of the club and a great player. Why sign Mark Mexico, The Warriors Prop, Daniel Harrison ect…can't we use that money on Gifty? I think the club have got this wrong to let him go….i can understand Kitey, George, T-rex but Gifty is just quality even if he is getting old.

Manly has not signed Mark Mexico. They opted for Epahame Lauaki. Lauaki and Harrison would be on a pittance compared to what Glenn would command. Probably on minimum wages so they don't really affect the cap as we must have 25 players. Can't let two go to keep Glenn as we would be a player short. Lauaki is a prop in any case.

some players take the money (al la Kitey), some reject the money to stay with their mates (Skivvy).
Bit unfair on Kite, Mark? I got the impression he was gutted to be let go, it sounded like he either got no offer or no viable offer from Manly.

I know for a fact that Kite was considering retirement this year instead of leaving. It was only the very lucrative offer from Penrith that made him play on. Apart from his first contract he never really made big money at Manly but stayed because he loved the place. Still a Sea Eagle in my eyes.

Foran is 100% right (and a superstar).

Kieran Foran: repay blood and love with loyalty clause

March 25, 2014

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/kieran-foran-repay-blood-and-love-with-loyalty-clause-20140325-hvmn0.html

Manly superstar Kieran Foran has condemned what has become the accepted commercial reality of the NRL that means an account's book and "figures" could render meaningless the loyalty his teammate and friend Glenn Stewart has shown the Sea Eagles since 2003.

Foran also urged for the game's hierarchy to officially acknowledge the value of a long-term player's loyalty by accommodating it with dispensations in the salary cap.

The Kiwi international feared it was a poor reflection on rugby league that players now lived in terror of "the tap on the shoulder" once they had reached a certain age and he used Stewart, who made his debut for the Sea Eagles 11 years ago, as his example.

"For a guy like Glenn, who has played his career at Manly, put his heart and soul into the jersey . . . he shouldn't have to go, he shouldn't have to pack up and move to another club just because of figures – it's not right," said Foran, who was battling a calf injury before Friday's match against the Sydney Roosters.

"He should be given every opportunity to play out his career at this club and finish here, where he wants to finish, alongside his brother [Brett], alongside his teammates at the club that he loves. He shouldn't have to pack up and go. I've said that about other players; Brent Kite, I didn't want to see him go either."

Foran said the mere notion that a player of Stewart's standing at Manly faced the prospect of being shopped around like a lump of meat due to salary cap restraints, despite his years of service to the Sea Eagles, presented a poor message to players who were expected to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of their team and teammates.

"There would've been times years ago when Glenn probably had attractive offers from other clubs but he turned around and said 'no' to them and stayed here," Foran said. "It's happened to other guys in the game and I'm not telling people to feel sorry for Glenn because he wouldn't want that. My point is: if there's blokes who've played their careers at a joint, there should be a salary cap exemption that allows them to stay.

"Football is fast becoming that sort of business where there's every possibility later in your career that you get tapped on the shoulder and told to 'move on'. It's just part of reality and it is part of something that's, unfortunately, now a part of the game.

"It's extremely unfortunate as Glenn is a good mate of mine, he's one of my best mates, and I don't want to see him go.

"I've said it a number of times before but he and his brother are a huge part of this club, they've helped build this culture along with a lot of the senior boys who've been a part of the success, the grand finals over the years."

Stewart told the media on Tuesday that it felt "weird" to think his manager would need to negotiate a deal for him to play in rival colours, and against his brother, if Manly could not accommodate him.

"I'd love to stay here [but I'm] under no illusions, I know what the salary cap does," Stewart said. "We're just waiting to hear back from Manly.

"It's a pretty weird feeling, I haven't had to deal with it before but I've seen mates have to go through it and it's a strange thing. It's new to me so I'll just play it as it comes."

That's how I understood it as well. You raise a good point.

Well said Kieran. Can't agree more.

"He should be given every opportunity to play out his career at this club and finish here, where he wants to finish, alongside his brother [Brett], alongside his teammates at the club that he loves. He shouldn't have to pack up and go. I've said that about other players; Brent Kite, I didn't want to see him go either."

I hope Manly seriously thinks about the impact of letting Glenn go before making any big decisions.
To be honest and many will disagree with me but I would rather have Glenn play out his career at Manly as he should, then to pay Cherry 1mil for two years and have him take off to the broncos later.
I'll be extremely disappointed if the club doesn't look after Gift.

Nothing will change because ATM it does not help teams like souffs roosters and dogs. The nrl want superstars and highlight reels not what is right. By the time Lyon Choc Snake Gifty and King have all moved on they will make new rules to keep renolyds and the remaining Burgi as it's what fans want.

A change to the cap that will help clubs keep long serving players will be a timely help for Manly and no help for some other clubs who have preferred over the past 5 or more years to buy their way to the top.

The NRL are not presently rushing towards making changes to help clubs keep long serving players.

All NRL fans not just Manly fans thought that Beaver should have been compensated through salary cap concessions to stay. Look how poorly the NRL handled his nrl retirement.

There's been much said about the fact that Manly could choose to keep Gift and let other younger players be poached by other clubs. If he was that integral to Manly, they say, keep him. Every club has the choice.

But that's hardly the point.

Frankly, I'm over seeing clubs like Manly have to make these sorts of choices with players that have played their whole careers here.

The cut off should be raised to 10 years. But there should be dispensations in the order of 75% for players who reach the threshold.

Putting anything but maroon and white on Gifty is like putting tomato sauce on prime rib. It's still quality underneath but you've drowned it in rubbish.

Foran is 100% right, and it will be an absolute tragedy if Gifty has to go. The only problem is, no-one at the NRL is listening.

Keiran Foran is getting dangerously close to being the most articulate and intelligent voice in the game. Always seems to speak what everyone else is thinking.

Not a bad player or looker either.

God yes. The most boring town in Australia. Even the delights of porn and fireworks at Fyshwick couldnt get me there. Northern Beaches instead thanks

I live in Canberra and I can't tell you much I appreciate your sentiments. The more that people believe what you say the less likely they are to come here and that suits me just fine.

For the record, Canberra has the highest standard of living in the country of any major city, the best facilities, the lightest traffic, the longest life expectancy. The lowest unemployment. There is something on every weekend from car shows to country fairs. The restaurants are world class and the crime rate extremely low. We are a short drive to the snow and a short drive to the South Coast. The Schools and Universities are world class.

Yep, it's just awful, I don't know why I stay here, but I really urge you and all the others to stay where you are.

Edit: You haven't been able to get fireworks here for years.

Must be the porn

It's not a case that its keep Gift and lose someone else. Given how much the younger guys are on it would be four or 5.

This long serving rule will be changed by the NRL but not until Manly has been decimated and the favored ones have rebuilt.

Fox news now showing Gift saying he hasn't had an offer from Manly yet.

We need the bottomless cup that is the Dogs' cap

Hopefully Gifty's Manager earns his keep and gets him a lucrative last contract in the NRL/ESL.

Sam Kasiano would prefer to think of it as a Magic Pudding.

Some of Foran's words could be ominous for our club.

As a guy like Foran sees his mates being shafted by the club in their later years, will he see this happening to himself in the future and become a money chaser as there is no loyalty.

I urge fans to let the club know that letting Glenn go is not right. Manly has fewer fans than some clubs but we are a passionate force that believes in our club culture of pride, passion and mateship.
Glenn is a Sea Eagle and needs to stay that way. Our younger players need to see that they will be looked after by the club in the future.
It's up to you Manly.

Dean Ritchie, true to form, is trying to use the Glenn Stewart situation to try and turn fans against Dave Perry.
Gee.... I wonder who would be behind this?
