Is Axing Saab the answer ?

Mate, that's correct for about 80% of all tries scored out wide ... but Saab is a poor tackler in addition to any positional short comings or inexperience ... IMO he is uncoordinated, gangly and has poor body dynamics ... he has been kicked to 6 times in attack and hasn't even got close to timing his run or jump correctly ....

Kid needs more time in the reggies to learn his craft ... but I have my doubts ... no doubt he would look brilliant finishing off a backline movement .. and in the clear we would cheer .. but doubts he will ever become a complete footy player ...

For his sake I hope I am wrong ..

Another thread where I'm not a COMPLETE pork-chop :)

As I said, have to keep Saab in, and we have Harper chomping at the bit to play !

I think the first few weeks Saab lacked a bit of confidence, the last few weeks he’s also not had DCE inside him,so he wasn’t seeing the ball as regularly
Not many sabb detractors early in this thread gave much weight to loosing his best mate in preseason. He was supposed to commute with him FFS so i recon that had a lot to de with his early form. In fact the entire team would have been still reeling back then.

For the Numbnuts ... I have been constant in my opinion that Saab is far from being a complete footballer ... As long as his attacking strengths out weigh his other shortcomings .. happy days.

Jason Saab ... Half yearly Report Card.

Running in a straight line and putting the ball down ... 95/100 ... excellent
Defusing bombs .... 85/100 .... very good
Kick return metres .... 45/100 ... poor
Defensive reads and positioning ..... 54/100 ... needs improvement
Tackling effectiveness and technique ... 32/100 ... very very poor
Effectiveness under attacking bomb ... 10/100 ... very poor
Attitude and playing with others .... 93/100 ... very good and a redeeming quality

Agree some Woodsie - needs improvement with the tough kick returns and ugly hit ups, but we need to realise so young and many wingers including Addo Carr among others were thrown around first season or 2.
I think the 10/100 on attacking kicks is more 60/100 and could easily be 80+....more had ordinary kicks his way, in fact scored 2-3 when spot on but many too short/long, poorly placed ect
Tackling agree needs improvement, but loved that damn try saver vs Warriors
All in all Woodsie - an absolute keeper and future star

Tough marker @Woodsie bit of jeaousy perhaps from on old winger? :)
I think his hitups have been quite good. He is so lanky he looks fragile from a distance but he's actually a big bloke and doesn't get rag-dolled anywhere near as much as Garrick used to, for example.
His tackling and defence is also good I reckon, has made a couple of memrable stops really putting his body on the line, one may have been against Sivo.
True he is a work in progress but only 20, so his strength and positional play surely will continue to improve. He may not be the total wing package but with the advantages his exceptional speed brings I'd be delighted if he held his spot long term.

Yes .. agree, will improve, but in my opinion he will always have an asterisk that says .. "his pluses outweigh his minuses" ...

On the attacking kicks , I thought 10/100 was generous ... from 13, he has caught one and scored, caught one and didn't, and 11 where he jumped to early, too late, or was simply embarrassing .. yes he will get better, but his timing has been poor. and you can't blame the kick, the ball comes down where the ball comes down, it is up to the chaser to time his leap.

I have warmed to the kid though, his obvious enthusiasm for being part of the team is heart warming, and endearing ... so as a Manly player I wish him all the best. I still have my doubts that he will ever become a complete footballer, I don't think he has the physical coordination, watching him turn to chase is like watching a moose on ice skates, but if he continues to improve he will be a good footballer.

We must be watching with different coloured glasses ... and yes, too a degree I do watch the wingers and centres with a more critical eye ... and just like I supported Parker and people bagged me, like when I said Garrick would bounce back and people said punt him, like when I named Harper a keeper after his first game ... I do watch them closely ...

In Saab's favour is his apparent desire to get better ... so he will ... but a moose will never be a ballerina ... but it can be a very good moose ..

Again get some of the summary but can't recall Any wingers who break into first grade as instant stars...it's built through tough carries and tough experience- speed and ability alone are not enough.
Has caught 2 for tries and won 3-4 in the air and actually passed back inside to Harper....definitely can blame where a kick comes down as his aerial threat will prove unstoppable when dropped in goal for him to fly and make a grab 1 on 1....when kicks are short he is competing with escorts and in a feeding frenzy of 5 + players, this I believe will be shown in future with better placed cross field kicks

There is the distinction ... I am not talking about whether he will be a star, or even good ... I am talking about whether he will be a complete footballer ... and in my opinion, he will always be a player that has shortcomings in his game ... a player you are prepared to put up with the downside because of the high upside ... and at the moment us fans have bought in ... but as this forum highlights on a weekly basis, fans are fickle ...

I think the first few weeks Saab lacked a bit of confidence, the last few weeks he’s also not had DCE inside him,so he wasn’t seeing the ball as regularly

The difference is that with Cherry out there, he gets the ball to Saab in space where he can use his pace effectively. It took a while to work things out with them, but they have been a very potent combination. In fact, our right side of DCE, Guac, Harper and the Volvo has become a very potent attacking side in recent months.

The game against Canberra ... Walker and Cust did what Walker and Cust do in a playmaking role. Ran themselves out of room and almost in panic, passed off to someone right next to the sideline with pretty much zero room to do anything but either throw a wild hail Mary back inside, or get pushed into touch.

The difference is that Cherry is willing to sacrifice his own running game to give speed players like Saab early ball so he can run. Neither Walks or Cust when playing the halves like sacrificing their running game.
