I'm starting to feel sorry for the refs . .

Never feel sorry for the refs. @The Who Generally, you can't come back from that once you start down that road. @;)

I agree with all that.

What I don't understand is that ratings are up, attendance is up, money pouring in....so therefore logically more people clearly think the product is better.

I do fear we are a few more rule tweaks away from following Rugby Unions slide into irrelevancy.
They're trying to turn the game into the likes of basketball in the US, where they have constant turnover of possession, & have buzzers, bells & countdown timers going off all the time as well as songs during stoppage of play.

The NRL has admitted the Bunker is playing too big a role in the game and vowed to limit its ability to stop play when high shots are missed live.

But head office are still denying there’s a head high crackdown happening,(ah hahahahahaha lol, liars) despite 15 players getting sin binned for it throughout Round 8.

I had a thought - with my tin foil hat on - that the nrl were doing this now, so they could have a drama free magic round next w/end.

All the NRL need do is send off a player if they do a deliberate attack to the head and penalise a player if they do a careless tackle to the head that causes obvious injury.

Everything else should not be acted on during the game. Leave it to Monday for the match review people.

Like the two knees Sitili threw in against the Dogs?

Seriously, the NRL make a rod for there own backs on the regular.

I think most of the "high" tackles are because there are three tacklers trying to stop the ball carrier. How can you wrap your arm around when you are shoulder-to-shoulder with a fellow defender? Also, most of the bad head injuries happen in head clashes between friendly fire.
If the refs gave more advantage for the low tackle, such as allowing the tackler to regain his feet and stand at marker, thus slowing up the play-the-ball, then we'd seen much more attractive tackling. There is so little bootlace tackling these days, which dilutes the spectacle because it used to be a skill to be admired. Now it is primarily 'care to dance?' tackling.

How can the NRL say there's not a crackdown on head high contact when the ONFIELD referee called two penalties against us for high contact that we challenged and were overturned by the bunker ( which is pretty much unheard of)
I doubt either of those would have been called if there wasn't a directive from above.

Can't go to Vegas and brag about how our players wear no helmets, then come home and penalise and suspend the same players for making head contact, in particular accidental contact.

If the NRL are convinced they have a duty to do all they can about head contact and that is why we now have these penalties and bins, then the only rational answer left is mandatory helmets.

As in the NFL could then stop giving helmet/head contact penalties and sin bins.
Yep I thought the same thing re helmets on the weekend.

The line from Abdo that there has been no crackdown is simply ridiculous.

Does he expect us to believe that some random refs and/or bunker clowns just decided on a collective whim to start binning people for any head contact no matter how small/accidental and no matter when it supposedly happened (2 sets ago?). They have clearly been directed to do so. The fact he is not owning it speaks volumes as to the leadership in the game. Just more knee jerking responses which then get knee jerked back the other way when there’s an uproar.

Really annoyed he isn’t being grilled harder on this by so called journalists, who are clearly not interested in rocking the boat.

Both the refs and bunker are making dud calls "every game"
The issue is not just them, but mainly the heirarchy who have them under the microscope to clamp down on "any" head collision (not head high)....the 1 where a bloke who was felled in a tackle and his head collided with TKO's stomach, was the worst thing Iv'e ever seen in a rugby league game.
I mean if they are going to rule that 10 in the bin, teams will lose 3 o4 players every set of 6 tackles !!
To be fair with the crackdowns due to safety, i don't even mind it....but now it's become ridiculous where a defending player who has zero intent to go high and has an attacking player fall into him, is marched for 10 minutes for "being on the field" and holding his position - no swinging arm or shoulder to the head, more a backstop in the way of a bloke falling and is 1-2 foot off the ground....guess what, his head will hit a player EVERY time !!
The big problem is it will change, but after there is a tight Grand Final being decided by a player "wrongly" sin binned, but as usual with the NRL - too little too late after this blight on the game decides a Premiership .....
