Right. So it's not the money, it's the promise of access to even more money in the future that makes the difference. Guess that makes it all right then, especially seeing as though Trent Robinson can also speak French…

The doors that the Roosters board could open would be far reaching.

Smart player managers would be engaging with their players ( who generally aren’t so smart ) and pushing every button.

It’s why for example whilst the Dolphins lost the race , they may have even offered more money BUT the offers of golf games , paper bags , scholarships , houses , cars , children’s educations and life after footy will win most times.

Look let’s give them credit where credits due , it’s smart recruiting.

BUT if the NRL wants an even competition then all these factors need to be accounted for, otherwise they’ll be stacked each year and every year , forever.

Assuredly the managers are getting a kick back of some kind as well. If they are just getting their 15% (or what ever) there's no incentive in them encouraging the player to take a lower offer at the Roosters.

Yes you can bet that’s part if it too!!

It's not hard to see why Souths hate Easts so much. An enemy of my enemy becomes my ally, which is why I always want Souths to beat Easts.
I don't like Souths (unless they are playing Easts) but at least they cultivate juniors, unlike Easts who pillage from the hard work of all other clubs. Canterbury has adopted this methodology this season, but it doesn't have the impressive corporate clout to offer a career post-football.

No different to the Thoroughbreds having an under the table slush fund designed to keep the higher quality and more popular home grown Qld players at the Broncos. How else do you think they had sides in the 90s where of the 17 chosen, maybe only one or two had not played test and/or origin football, won premierships or WCC's, yet they were under the cap?? And remember, these weren't just island nation test players of the 90s. This was practically 2/3's or more of the Qld Origin side and sometimes as much as half of the Aussie test side!!!

The problem is that if there is no paper trail, its extremely hard to police. How is the NRL to know if a missed putt cost Uncle Nick 200 large on a verbal bet?

as ive said before the cap needs to be replaced with a points-based system. keep a monetary value on total cap sure but have a points-based ledger that only allows for so many points on players as a club.

Better players obviously have much higher points value BUT if that said player was a 'real' jnr from the club they would get deductions against their overall value. if the said player was a 1 club player then again deductions. If the player made his NRL debut with the club more deductions.

If you are a rep player that adds points. if you represent your country that adds points. etc etc.

The points would be a fixed amount for each category so as soon as said player represents then its added from the next seasons points cap. the clubs would have time to work out the following years points and some sort of trade window should be implemented so clubes can if needed swap out or move on players that soak up too many points.

would make it more difficult for clubs like rooters that don't develop their own buying say a teddy who when at the top of his game was the best player in the comp. sure you could have him but it would take a large chunk of points.

its just a fairer version of the money cap that couldn't be rorted.

The biggest problem is that players are signed below their real value with the promise of extraneous benefits. How did the Gifty debacle not pave the way? Remember the half-price Hayne deal to the Tits? The NRL are ignoring all the crap that is known to be going on because it is very simple to police and they CHOOSE not to. The real question is why are they? Surely a level playing field is far more attractive to fans, sponsors, and the broadcasters. There must be BIG under the table money going to NRL employees.

This is where the salary cap system is basically screwed, obviously a huge number of benefits offered even above TPA’s.

The rich get richer hey !!

Money Money Money its a rich man's world. About time the NRL stopped paying lip service to issues and started doing something about it.
