How much of a roster rebuild do we really need?

Smokin Joe

Bencher
Some will definitely go and some will come in,but do we really need a major overhaul, personally think we should stick with developing some guys we have and make sure we can afford to retain later on when they will cost more...potential side for next year...
1 Trbojevic
2 Garrick
3 Hopoate
4 Walker
5 Suli
6 Cust
7 DCE
8 AFB
9 Fainu
10Taupau
11Waddell
12Sironen

15Gosiewski
16Sipley
17Boyle
Add in Elliot,Funa,Anderson,Metcalfe,Elgey,Paseka,Croker,Olakau'atu,Schuster and Keppie and that gives you a pretty decent top 27 players.Guys like Aukafolau,Miski,Dockar-Clay,DeLuis,Saunders are impressing in CC who could be added into that squad.Potentially Walker could be gone and would replace like for like with a quality player but all in all a squad I would be happy to stick with....one guy I would like to see us pick up is Dean Britt(son of former dogs prop Darren),really good second rower with the bunnies, more of a no frills type, but a goer with some attacking skill and not getting a go with Bennett.Gets involved, has an occasional offload and works hard in defence.

I have to say walker done he won't be here. We need a centre and 6 that has not changed. But i believe we try to develop albert hopoate to centre.
We need to get a 6

When looking at the make up of our team for the next 3-5 years we have to consider that if we wish to keep Turbo, Jurbo, DCE, Fainu. Kapow, AFB .. throw in Hoppa and Schuster then we are going to be cash strapped for supporting cast ....

In other words we are going to have a lot of money tied up in some very good players .. and will need to get lucky/skillful with cheap supporting players ....

And I believe this is where we have already been positioned ..... the cleanout has already occured ..... we have one of the longest lists of young up and coming players ever ...... it is these players or no names like them that we will need to fill in the gaps with ... on a budget ...

I think we need to make some pretty big changes. Yesterday was a good win but the Warriors are not the yardstick. There are too many power forwards and not enough workers. When you have too many big power forwards, they come unstuck in tight games when fatigue sets in.

Keep Taupau, AFB and Sipley for power, but replace the others with some slimmer and fitter middles. Gosie and Waddell are more backrowers and Tanginoa is another power forward, so we can definitely use a couple of decent middles.

The backrow looks pretty good. Sironen runs hard, offloads, Tommo is good experience and Jake is obviously a gun so I wouldn't be spending big bucks there. Waddell can provide depth.

The money should go on a half that can organise; who we could get, I don't know.

The rest of the coin should go on buying a good centre and a good winger.

So I'd be looking at 4 key signings all up.

1. An organising half
2. A slimmer, fitter, workman type prop/'s
3. A centre to replace Walker
4. A winger who is big, strong and fast to get the sets rolling.

I think Tapau still looks like a wolf lost among sheep.
He has the size and ability but seems to have forgotten how to use it.
Also think he is better on the left edge rather than up the middle or right.

Wonder how he would go playing in the centres for a game

I'm not sure about Suli as a centre or winger. He is doing OK at the moment but he plays like a forward.
Sandwich should be playing in the centres. He looks to have all the attributes to be a long-term success.
A tall, fast winger is needed, and a 5/8. Hopefully some of the younger players will fill these spots next season.
I think we have plenty of forwards plus some good back-ups in the Workers team. It's just our backline that can be improved.

For me Boyle,DeLuis and Saunders fit the bill for more workmanlike guys,an organizing half yes,but would like to wait and see how Elgey and Cust go before chasing one,if they don't fit then O'Sullivan or Townsend would fit the bill.Walker or a replacement is a no brainer. As to the big winger,I would love to see how Nathan Davis goes when he comes back mid-year from suspension with workers,he is an NRL calibre winger/centre(similar to Mitchell/Inglis).What you have mentioned doesn't translate to big changes, sounds more like fine tuning?

I think Hoppa will be set from day 1 in 2020
and play centres with Suli the other.
If we can bring an impact winger like Rapana or Oates could ice a cake with Elgey having the opportunity to make the 6 his own....its his to lose, so hopefully continues to improve in time.
Keep in mind a few other rookies in the wings, with Schuster coming into contention over the next year or 2....
Exciting times ahead...

Agreed. I think perrett hodko and taufua can go but other than that its more about retention and upgrades

Garrick really should be having a go in the centres. I feel like he has been put on the wing for now as it brings more harmony to the backline

Ide still love to see tapau shifted to the back row and buy another good prop. Marty does hard work and he gets meters the hard way, but put him in a wide running back Rower spot and he would absolutely terrorise halves/centers on the edge like choc used to do... That's one thing we really miss, an edge running backrower that punches holes thru defensive lines.. Haven't had one since choc retired

Gee. It seems to me we have more props than a film studio.
Don't forget we have Tent to come back, and Tango, Lance Boyle, then there's Baldy Saunders and apparently another good prop at the Workers.

We probably don't need one, but just imagine being able to afford a Rorters style of rebuild?!?!
