The late mail on the Game Plan show last night. Won't see out his deal at Manly , will be gone due to salary cap pressure & his price tag has gone up heaps. Several clubs chasing him apparently.

Read elsewhere that he stays til year's end. I so don't get the salary cap. Other clubs - read roosters, bulldogs - seem to have an endless roster of high profile players. Why can't we have some transparency? I understand players don't want their earnings published but plenty of other people do - politicians, teachers, artists ...

Our roster is the best in the league so we need to be careful when accusing others

B Stewart
G Stewart
Lyon
Foran
Cherry Evans
Watmough

Those blokes are all among the top tier players and then on top of that we can toss the likes of the guys below who have all played Origin

Kite
Matai
Ballin
King
Williams

Yeah Brett, Glenn, Jamie and Choc have peaked so we have to be careful of paying huge overs for guys that won't kick on further.

Pretty sure he was signed for 2 years, should be here until the end of 2014.

RLW said that Horo took the gamble of a 1 year contract on smaller money to try and earn a bigger long term deal

Perhaps he did sign for 2 with the 2nd year being an option in his favour and that is what he is taking up ?

Also Darren, you said the same about all of those blokes in 2010. I remember our debate then with you taking the "Glenn Stewart will never play rep footy again" angle :p

Best in the league doesn't always relate to most expensive. If you too that at face value, look at parra, with the money they are paying some of their players one would assume they were best in the league

The same as saying most of our squad are rep players when in reality most of our squad used to be rep players

Making up for lost time there

Of course you also pay for players of exceptional calibre not just for on field but what they contribute off by way of assisting the development if the young pups.

Guys, at nearly 30 and more it's a fair question. Sir Alex Ferguson has rolling 1 year contracts at the biggest club in the world as he said the 30's guys cannot consistently play for long periods of time without injury. No use tying big bucks for guys constantly injured or out. That's a fair call looking at the years of knocks Brett, Glenn and Jamie have taken.

Horo is clearly revelling in the culture of the place, and the way he's used on the field. He could take another $100,000 to go elsewhere but then end up with less game time, playing a role he's not enjoying in a culture that makes the hard times more difficult.

His call.

Odds of rocking up at the Storm or the Rabbitohs - who have a similar culture to ours are pretty high

Unlikely to see him got somewhere like the Roosters, Souths or Melbourne given they would likely be on the market to pay much more for his services.

It would be clubs still turning over mid-range players and with cash to splash.

Be sorry to see him go - but the good news is players like Horo and Lawrence and Symonds play their best footy at Manly after struggling previously.....and others like Lussick and Harrison and Oldfield be handy for us but struggle to make first grade at "weaker" clubs. It cant be a co-incidence.

Pretty confident we can find others to fill the Horo type role and its as more about our culture/coaching and core players making these blokes a bit better.

Not pushing Horo out the door, far from it, hope he stays, but he's only looking the player he is now cause of that jersey he's wearing. Someone else will wear it equally well given a chance.

King should retire as his body has had enough and then we can re-sign players like Horo who will play more games a year

Well, Kite and now Galuvao won't be here next season. I'd be surprised if Wolfman goes around again (I'd love it if he did) but could see a team throwing plenty at him, now Horo.

Agree that Jason King doesn't really add that much anymore. Time to maybe move on from him, as he's taking 150k odd of our cap year after year (guess only), and doesn't play much at all.

That being said, I truly respect what a clubman he has been.

This is so off the mark its not funny. If he was signing players on 1 year deals, then he'd be getting absolutely nothing for the club in transfer fees, as the players would be free agents at year end. Makes no sense at all when the fringe players fergie signs make the best 11 in 50% of the epl, let alone other leagues in Europe. He'd be losing half his squad every year. Where's the benefit when man utd has the funds to simply pay out any contracted player they don't want, if for some reason, 50 other clubs weren't lining up to sign them up and pay man utd the transfer fee. Stick to juniors rugby league, cos football is not your forte.

Leaving Parra out because that's where he came from, the only real contenders in that category are the Tigpies and perhaps the Worriers.
