Henry Perenara vs Manly

Just watching the Sunday Footy Show (starts at 1PM in Adelaide). I was gobsmacked at Fittler's comment about the penalty count. He actually claimed that Manly are one of the least penalised teams and last night would have been a shock to their system.

What drugs is Freddie on? The top 3 penalised teams in 2017 are in order Melbourne, Chooks and Manly.

We are equal first. what bugs me even more than spaceman freddie sprouting crap like that is why does no one call him on it????

If these guys claim to be experts...they should know it isn't anywhere near true. In fact it takes 10 seconds to look it up on nrl stats.

Crap like that bugs the hell outta me.

I was at the game and Penrith line speed was better than ours so the off side business doesn't faze me...the penalty on Cleary when Winterstein belted him was poor discipline and let us down when we finally muscled up and showed some aggression...Brian Kelly's dropped ball after the juggle was costly, ditto Uate. We defended well but our heads weren't in that game.

Sure, the 50/50 calls went Penrith's way but appear to be suffering a big match hangover after the Sharks game. That has as much to do with our loss as the refereeing IMO.

What gets me is peranara told dce you've been warned and again and again . If he was fair dink he would of marched one of our guys , instead just kept piggybacking the riff back into it . It was a no win situation . No disrespect snake ,but watching on tele mate they must of had rockets in their boots to be getting off their line so quick .

I was at the game too last night and with a penrith mate of mine we both commented on the 10 metres at times he had us back 12 metres then other times was about 8 then when the ref's switched it changed again
Penrith did have good line speed at times especially when they only had to get back 8 metres we did alot of defence which cost us line speed
Whatching on TV you dont see how far a team gets back but watching Live at ground you see so much inconsistent refereeing

Manly games are hardly shown on 9 so Fittler wouldn't have an idea about a lot of things

Thought we where off our game. Ref made sure we had no chance to get into it also.
Kelly i have to say not sure if he a long term option thats my opinion.
Our go forward was crap, marty and addin been quite for few games.
Darcy please stop giving away dumb penalties racing out of line.
Perrett not overly impressed here, slow in defence.

Manly are a class above Penrith, a little more discipline and ball control even with a flat performance and penalties against us would of seen Manly easily win that game.

This performance was in the making for a while now, some players are busted and the injury toll in general is rising, been a tough 2 months.

Hard to stay up for so long in this even premiership.

All this talk about games rigged and ref's bias happens every year, if this so called issue was so rampant someone would of owned up by now.

The problem is and always has been about the way the game is ruled, more about not penalizing most infringements to keep the game flowing, or seeking an even penalty count to be seen as "fair", combine the two and you are bound for inconsistent performances.

Conversely when a ref tries to ref as he see's it with a huge bias count against one side he is seen in a negative light, the Ref can't win.

In saying that i don't agree the count should of been that overwhelmingly in favour of Penrith but in saying that Manly still should of won this game even with such a penalty count.(obviously harder to do so though)

Though I think Manly fans have more class than to jump the fence and confront him on the field like some doesn't-matta fans did with Hartley.
I don't know man, had I been at the game, and had a skinful at the leagues club prior.......@:(

It's the chicken or the egg argument. What came first? Manly's errors putting ourselves under pressure by gifting possession to Penrith in our own quarter or Henry's whistle blowing everytime we got frustrated in defence or farted. I really believe that despite all of this we are and were a much better side and looked much more threatening when we managed to hold onto the ball. If we had some more time and some more calls going our way we definitely would have come home with the win.

from memory errors compounded the penalties only twice. Also there was a time where they stripped the ball from us with two in the tackle and we didn't get the obvious call, we were not given the chance. I have no issue with 14 penalties being blown against us but it just wasn't equal

Just a casual check of all the Manly games Henry Perenara has refereed since he became a first grade ref in 2011.....

9 April 2012 - Manly def. Penrith 30-0 at Brookvale. Penalties 5-5
13 May 2013 - Roosters def. Manly 16-4 at Brookvale. Penalties 9-9
16 August 2013 - Souffs def. Manly 22-10 at Gosfors. Penalties 5-10 (Tooves presser night)
21 July 2014 - Manly def. St Merge 21-12 at Kogarah. Penalties 7-9
6 March 2015 - Eels def. Manly 42-12 at Pirtek. Penalties 9-7
20 March 2015 - Dogs def. Manly 16-12 at Brookvale. Penalties 5-5
4 April 2015 - Canberra def. Manly 29-16 in Albury. Penalties 7-3
25 April 2015 - Manly def. Storm 12-10 at AAMI. Penalties 9-10
30 May 2015 - NQ def. Manly 18-14 at 1300. Penalties 3-5
26 June 2015 - Souffs def. Manly 20-8 at ANZ. Penalties 9-6
13 July 2015 - Manly def. Titans 38-6 at CBus. Penalties 6-8
14 March 2016 - Tigers def. Manly 36-22 at Leichhardt. Penalties 8-8
20 June 2016 - Titans def. Manly 30-10 at CBus. Penalties 6-10
4 July 2016 - Manly def. St Merge 36-6 at Brookvale. Penalties 7-9
25 July 2016 - Manly def. Souffs 20-12 at SFS. Penalties 6-11
20 August 2016 - Storm def. Manly 38-18 at Brookvale. Penalties 4-6
18 March 2017 - Manly def. NQ 30-8. Penalties 9-10
8 July 2017 - Penrith def. Manly 16-8. Penalties 4-14

That's 18 times that Perenara has refereed a Manly game either as the so-called pocket ref or as the main ref. We have a 7-9 record with him as a referee and the penalty count reads Manly 119, opposition 144.

And as you can see, we have lost the last 6 penalty counts with a total of 36-60 (which just happens to coincide to when he became the main ref rather than the pocket ref) even though we have won 3 of those games, 2 by big scores. But the pattern does show that his penalty counts against Manly regardless of the score are starting to get bigger and bigger and the gap between our penalty count and the oppositions is getting steadily wider when he is reffing us.

Make of it what you will.
Any chance you could do this for the other refs too (particularly for the last 6 games)? Then we could see whether it's only Perenara or the other refs too.

I agree we didn't get the calls we deserved. The ref should have been consistent. He wasn't. I still feel that despite this it wasn't the sole reason for our loss. But I'll just stop at that.. because regardless of opinions the refs should never be the talking point of the game.

Nah its simple (if the club had asked me I'd charge a consulting fee but in here its free hehehe).

Our last 6 games:

Rd.11 - Manly def. GC 30-10. Refs: Cecchin, Gee. Penalties - 7-8
Rd.13 - Manly def. Canberra 21-20. Refs: Sutton, Butler. Pens - 4-6
Rd.14 - Manly def. Knights 18-14. Refs: Klein, Stone. Pens - 8-9
Rd.16 - Manly def Sharks 35-18. Refs: Cummins, Butler. Pens - 3-9
Rd.17 - Manly def. NZ 26-22. Refs: Badger, Roby. Pens - 4-6
Rd.18 - Penrith def. Manly 16-8. Refs: Perenara, James. Pens - 4-14

We haven't actually broken even with penalties since losing to Brisbane in Round 10 (5-5) and haven't 'won' a penalty count since the win over the Dogs in Round 4 (8-5).
