Main problem with Manly is we could have 4 sides just as amazing as each other given out superstar rosters over the years.

Some of the teams on Fox for other clubs have been pretty ****e to be fair.

Frank Stanton played for Belrose Eagles as a 16 year old.Although he was apparently born at St Leonards so were a lot of people from the Manly Warringah area in the 40's and 50's.Royal North shore hospital was almost outside St Leonard's Station in those days and much smaller than now. As an example we lived at Seaforth but my sister was born at RNS (St Leonards). Try telling her she is not MW born and bred. If Frank was a bulldog? fair enough but he is good enough to be Born and Bred to me.

Good point ... I just remembered I was born at St. Leonards too ...... Manly Hospital didn't have a maternity ward back then ...

It is wrong ... I was there ... he played almost exclusively at full back in the reggies ... and whilst he did play on the wing in firsts .. he also filled in a fair bit as fullback ....

He also owned the BP servo at Wheeler heights ...

Specialist winger is a load of moose crap ..
Again from memory....Keith Blackett and Allan Maddalena from Newtown were fullbacks in Reserve Grade so they would have been ahead of Derek Moritz as a fullback.Even Ken Irvine had a match at Fullback and did the odd bit of goal kicking ..he didn’t have Darcy Lawler the ref to pass on tips !!

Sorry about the delay getting back to you Cherry ... but before I did I wanted to talk to my older brother in case my memory was faulty ... my brother was mates with Derek and played with him from u/17's to grade .... he said he never saw Moritz play any position other than fullback, said he was exclusively a fullback ... he added that he may well have played a few games at centre or wing ,, but he can't recall ever seeing them ... this confirms my own memories .....

Don't want to take sides in the Derek Moritz discussion but I have the 1971 MWRLFC annual report in front of me. There is a list of 1st grade players and points scored. It lists Bob Batty played 24 games and Derek Moritz also played 24 games in the 1971 !st grade team. Can probably scan and post page if anyone wants.

Thanks Freddo ... it is possible ... 1971 was the only year I was not in Sydney ... however I stand by my original position .... Moritz was a fullback, he may have filled in for a year on the wing ... but he was a always a fullback ...

It would be akin to calling Turbo a winger ....

Reserve grade or lower grade may have been a different matter but i can only recall Derek Moritz playing wing whenever he played i st grade for Manly . Bob batty would have been the regular i st full back until Wombat took over in 72 . Think that Alan "The Hound " Maddalena switched from New Town mid 71 and the name Blackett i can vaguely recall as a lower grade full back . 17 "s to grade footy could have represented a few years so could have been when Derek played as a regular one in that time .

Remind me ... when is Moose hunting season ...

Keith Blackett was a local junior played many years for the Manly Blues (Marlins) RU team. Great goal kicker and a very good player I thought. Played 3 FG games for the Sea Eagles around 1970. Always thought that he or Billy Denoon (another local junior with 3 FG matches) would take Batty's place when he retired. But they had to contend with Wombat so had no chance. Sadly both Keith and Bill have passed in the last few years.
Edit: Sorry originally said Manly Savers but this a different team. But I think there was a lot of player crossover in those days from Manly Savers and Manly Blues RU (now Marlins)..

PSS ... I am crtain I missed a few ... for coach I was thinking Ray Ritchie ... he only ever played for Manly but I am not sure if he was locally grown ...
Ivan Cleary was a local junior. He used to mow my lawns when he was a teenager before he made first grade.

It was a long time ago but I only recall Derek playing wing in FG. I knew Derek when I was a kid and don't remember him playing FB, but hey it was a long time ago. Batty was was our FB when I started going to games in '67. I remember Keith Blackett filling in for him and then Wombat when he retired.

16 Norm Pounder
17 Lindsay Drake.

16 Norm Pounder
17 Lindsay Drake.
I remember Norm Pounder from 1968 onwards. Ron Wiley called him the best pound for pound forward in the game. Lindsay Drake played for NSW in 1970 after on;y a handful of games in 1st grade. He was elbowed out after Malcolm Reilly arrived and played the 1975 Grand Final for St.George. He played for us in the 1970 GF.

Anybody remember Rob Cameron ?

Boustead that brings back videos of some speed to burn. Wing is such an under rated position. I'd love for Manly to have a out and out electric excitement machine out on one wing at least. Boustead was bloody small by today's standards, so I'd settle for Brent Naden. He's a Gooden.
