Apparently Tony Abbott was on 2GB this morning and mentioned that he has a special announcement about Brookvale Oval this afternoon at 3pm which the fans should be excited about.

Anyone else hear that?

Assume it's just re-confirming what we already know.

$2.5-Million when they are going to spend more than $1-Billion on sporting grounds in the west.
Big deal! What will that pay for? A couple of new coffee carts?
Politicians are not serious about creating a modern stadium on the northside of Sydney. Patching up Brookie is not the answer.

Yeah, but just the same, we'll take it thank you very much.
With the existing $10m from federal and $10m from state, let's get going on the plans.

Liberals only need to promise small amounts as it is a safe seat and Labour will offer nothing because they are no chance of winning that seat.

Interesting

Federal and State govts announced earlier this month that Cowgirls stadium will be rebuilt with 125m from each of them.
This was after Thurston complained after last years gf.

Yet Manly has to beg and grovel for less than 10% of that. What the fcuk is going on?

I really hope someone has the guts to ask the hard questions at 3pm today.

Townsville is a growing region and the Cowboys are the biggest, most popular thing they have. Liberal and Labour fall over themselves trying to get them things like a new stadium for the Cows to play in. It also means they have this brand new stadium that can also host rugby tests and Socceroos games. Win win.

Brookvale is in the middle of a relatively safe Liberal seat that Labour doesn't think it has a chance to win. For the LNP its a case of giving the natives just enough to keep them happy and keep them voting their way. This doesn't include a new stadium for Manly, the only national competition professional sports team in the area.

Its a pity Abbott wasn't the sports loving PM that John Howard was. If he was maybe Brookie would have been given the money that St Merge got to upgrade Kogarah, a ground used but 4 times per season in national competition (though its used much more for lower levels).

Has Abbott made the announcement yet? Maybe it will be the money's promised will include compound interest, which would make the total amount pledged to around 30 mil?

An indication of how out of touch tony is with reality

Actually, Townsville is struggling at the moment, economically. The cowboys are the most popular thing however, not only for the people of Townsville, but for the people of Qld from Rocky up. People regularly make up to a 16 hour round road trip to watch the cowboys, and that generates a bit of money for the town.

The people of Townsville have been pushing for a stadium for years now, using Thurston as a figurehead, and the region is excited about the jobs it will create locally, both in construction and future staffing.

Townsville is the unemployment capital of Australia at the moment with an unmatched unemployment rate of 12.4 percent. Townsville is far from a growing region currently, that's why the LNP and Labour are both for a stadium. Votes, any which way they can.

Still, it's good for the region.
