Does anyone know how much it costs to get one of those right hand column ads in google when people do an appropriate search for your business?

Dan could probably tell you more, but the basic gist of AdWords is that it's auctioned based (as far as I know). You put in a bid for how much you are willing to pay to have your ad shown when someone searches for those words.

It all comes down to you: in effect, it can cost as little as 1c per click (I believe it's clicks, not impressions).

that is pretty much correct but for a different thing

Adwords are like we have in the banner on this site and you say you wil pay x amount for each advert display. The ones in Google.com you actually pay for rank there which costs a bit more.
