I am confused ..... having listened to the arguements I am trying to decide whether to play Jason Taylor at half with an 89% or Jonathon Thurston with an 82% ..... decisions ,,,,, decisions ..... I pick ......

PSS ... To save you searching the archives ... I just made those %'s up for the sake of my point ...

What I found surprising when I looked at some stats was this.
In 2013 Jamie Lyon kicked 69% and scored 242 points
In 2014 he kicked at 68.8%
In 2015 he kicked at 67.4%
In 2016 he kicked at 73.7%
In 2017 Walkz kicked at 68.1%
Then last year DCE managed 79.1% our best season in a while.

That said given Tafua and Williams scored 40 tries between then in 2013 the 69% of Lyon more than likely included a higher percentage of sideline attempts.

I remember messing about with mates at lake park kicking goals and field goals in bare feet, those old steedens caned when wet.

Yeah .... there was none of this hold them in one hand and dive for the try line from 5m out ......

Robbo kicked at 100% during his career. His last shot at goal, he hardly even lined it up from out wide and that thing went sailing sailing between the posts.

Pressure kick too in a Grand Final @

Jokes or lamentations regarding scoring tries first aside....

In the last decade, one in three NRL matches have been decided by 6 points or less.
The fact that 32.25% of games finish so closely points to the importance of a reliable goal-kicker.

Often considered a ‘bonus’, goalkicking is a crucial skill that is undervalued.

The ability to strike above 80% is an underpriced commodity, and therefore delivers significant value at minimal cost.

I have said in quite a few threads that teams bust their butts to get 4 points, to have a free shot at adding another 50% in points should mean kickers practice until their leg falls off, then practice with the other one.

Never should it be considered a 'bonus' with a 'boot it and see' attitude.

Yup, we've had some good ones over the years.

I'd still make Garrick practise kicks 20 meters from the right hand side line as I can't remember when he's converted one from there.

Anyway.... 4 points good, 6 points better!

Lowest success rates in 2020 (Minimum 20 attempts to Round 12)

– Moses Mbye (Tigers) 62.86% (22/35)

– Kalyn Ponga (Knights) 68.89% (31/45)

– Reuben Garrick (Sea Eagles) 69.05% (29/42)

– Kodi Nikorima (Warriors) 70.00% (14/20)

– Kyle Feldt (Cowboys) 70.37% (19/27)

edit: sorry about the pic of sCam

A couple of things the stats don’t show
  • where they’re taken from
  • pressure kicks, how many times do we see kickers land them from everywhere when they’re comfortably leasing?

But yes, Reuben needs to be better.
