Sam Backo – a larger-than-life front-rower who represented Queensland and Australia in the 1980s – has died.

Backo, 64, had been in intensive care at Cairns Hospital after being diagnosed with melioidosis - a bacterial infection - in April.

Recent media reports stated Backo may have contracted the soil-borne tropical disease while swimming in Freshwater Creek at Goomboora Park in Cairns.

Backo had been transferred to a Brisbane hospital but returned to Cairns where he passed on Sunday afternoon surrounded by family and friends.

'FASCINATING' INSIGHT AFTER TRAINER-GATE
Trainers seemingly can't get out of the news of late and former Warriors goalkicker Michael Witt told a Kiwi radio station a fascinating story about one the other day.

In a situation almost identical to Jayden Campbell and the Panthers last week, a trainer ran in front of Witt just as he was setting up to kick a vital goal several years ago.

And like Campbell, the trainer apologised after the event.

But here's the twist - the trainer admitted it was anything but an accident, and that he was sent out to deliberately distract Witt on the instructions of his coach, one of the best known men in the NRL.

Payne Haas has defected from Australia to Samoa ahead of the looming Ashes tour and next year’s Rugby League World Cup, in a hammer blow to new Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters.

CODE Sports first reported the news on Thursday, saying that Jeremiah Nani had also confirmed his defection, having played for Australia in 2022 but then Samoa last year.

How does that song go? "Newcastle's in Samoa!"

'Magic Mark' Nawaqanitawase’ ... !!!
Not sure if it's connected with a long run of Manly not being a serious contender ... but in recent times, when I've occasionally looked at non-Manly games, there's a few players I couldn't help admiring, even though they're not currently playing for Manly (!)

This guy is right up there. Heard something about he might go back to the Wallabies. I hope so because I don't like seeing such a great talent running around in Chook colours.

Wests tigers getting 110mill of that sweet sweet taxpayer money for two grounds as heaven forbid they have to suck it and have one home ground.

n-e-way...

$110 million in funding has been committed to the upgrade of the Tigers’ two home grounds of Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown Stadium.

It means that the Tigers will continue to play home games at the two grounds until 2041 according to a report from Code Sports.

Together with Allianz, that’s close to a lazy $1b of taxpayer funds on grounds. I still prefer Brookie to any of those places, but NRL ground funding is a joke.
