I know most wouldn't want to go to one to begin with, but can anyone imagine the equal rights rubbish that would be thrown around if gay's were banded from bars because they aren't heterosexual?

A Melbourne gay bar has been granted an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act in a landmark ruling which will allow security to refuse entry to heterosexuals.

The owners of Collingwood's Peel Hotel, which came under fire in April for promoting a gay Anzac Day party, successfully argued to the state planning tribunal that banning heterosexuals from the club would prevent "sexually based insults and violence".

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal granted the controversial powers to the club last week, the Herald Sun reports.

VCAT deputy president Cate McKenzie claimed that allowing straight men and women into the club would defeat the purpose of the venue.

"This would undermine or destroy the atmosphere which the company wishes to create," McKenzie said.

"Sometimes heterosexual groups and lesbian groups insult and deride and are even physically violent towards the gay male patrons."

McKenzie said some straight women came to the club because they found the gay patrons entertaining.

"To regard the gay male patrons of the venue as providing an entertainment or spectacle to be stared at, as one would at an animal at a zoo, devalues and dehumanises them," she said.

"(This exemption) seeks to give gay men a space in which they may, without inhibition, meet, socialise and express physical attraction to each other in a non-threatening atmosphere."

A spokeswoman for the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Lobby Group told the Herald Sun that gay men at the Peel had been made to feel like "zoo animals".

"This exemption was not sought to exclude members of the community but to try to maintain a safe space for men to meet," the spokeswoman said.

"It's sad that members of our community would have to go to the VCAT to preserve their rights.

"This is one of the only free venues with live music in the area, so certainly some people may feel a bit unhappy about the decision."

In another article they gave the bar managers name.

"The Peel manager Tom McFeely told the tribunal the plan to refuse entry had been advertised at the hotel, with no objections received.

Mr McFeely said most of the regulars at the hotel had responded positively"

On that basis then other pubs can keep poofs out of their hotels.

No fags allowed.

Not really Tookey!

You have to read the reasons and i must say that i do agree with them. These guys should be able to go out and be what they want to be without being treated as entertainment for people seeign them as a spectactle.

I know it sets a dangerous precedent but I agree with their reasoning

What about the disabled, should they get there own bars?
Lets not forget amputees, or disfigured people who get stared at constantly. should we give them their own bars?

Where does it end?

How many straight blokes actually drink at gay bars or clubs anyway?

I doubt they cop much **** in their own clubs anyhow. It just seems like another attempt to segregate themselves from the 'unclean breeders'.

Do they have bars already that are targetted towards them?

No there are bars that are marketed for the gay community, it has been the case for a while. If there were any of the ones you mentioned clontaago then of course they would have the same right if they applied for the same injunction.

Lets not sensationalise it!

It may seem a bit outlandish but I completely understand where they are coming from

Yeah Clon, it may not be right, but seeing as there are already women only gyms (Fernwood) I don't see why there cant be men only bars.

Ok lets say I open a bar. My taregt clientelle are WHITE men and women. I seek an injunction to ban all Aborigines because they have harrassed my white patrons in the past.

How far would I get? Not ****ing far.

I dont see why not clon, does it harm you in anyway or change the way you live act or behave?

not at all. Let and let live

I think you need to lay off the drugs for a while Dan.

What Im saying is you cant have one set of rules for one group, and another set for everyone else.

But there is no other rule for anyone else as it hasnt been challenged yet. It's that simple. Once it is challenged by a heterosexual bar trying to ban gays for the same reason then you have rights to complain right now you are sensationalizing it by jumping on a bandwagon before the cart has even started moving!

I can completely and utterly understand the gay community wanting a place where they can have fun without being persecuted, aggressively attacked or made a spectacle of.

I don't see why it should piss you off. Would you want to go to the gay bar anyway?

Straight from the byso arsenal of defense there mate.

I haven't touched any drug but alcohol for a long time. And even if i had it would not effect my capacity to see reason within this argument.

Emotion has no place in a legal argument. This was a legal decision your emotional reaction and opinion hold no water when it comes to utter and complete sense. As I see it the correct legal decision was made.

It doesnt change my life in anyway.

Your argument that you cant have one set of rules for one set of people and not for others holds no water.

Our law recognises minorities as needing further protection, this decision has not been challenged in regards to a hetero only bar so what you arguing is an emotional reaction before the facts have been drawn down.

There are a lot of men only places, there are women only places. It changes nothing but allows this community a right to the freedom that they deserve. As a human being how could you be against another human being being able the freedom to enjoy themselves without ridicule?

I understand where you are comming from Dan and agree that any estabvlishment whether it be a pub or shop has the right to let in whoever they want.

But isn't that why pubs and clubs hire bouncers to eject patrons who are being unruly?

If some guys enter a pub and start calling patrons names etc then they are simply thrown out or better still not even let in.

The only problem is that under current anti discrimation laws I cannot see that they will be allowed to do it.

Easy because they are being discriminated against

Sure they hire bouncers to do that, not a worries, but if they have to do it week in week out their targeted clients wont want to return week in week out to have to see the trouble going on.

Is it no easier to prevent rather than stop whilst in progress.

I dont see it as heterosexuals or females being discrimintaed against, I see it as the gay community protecting their rights

Good luck to them, I see no reason to be upset by this in anyway.

I just dont get the bigotry
