Garrick general news thread

If we lose Garrick and with no DCE we'll have to find a back-up kicker for Fogarty in the event he misses any time. Are there any candidates in the squad?

If the reason the club needs to keep Garrick is because the team needs a back up kicker, they have bigger issues. Not that I care who can and can’t kick, but Taukeiaho has been a back up at his former clubs,in the past, just to answer your question
Not what I said or implied, but hey, you do you.

I’m surprised how maligned Garrick is within our own supporter base. He is a great competitor and always gives 110%. I thought he made a good fist of centre and was a real threat. Sure, his edge had issues but I think defending between DCE and Saab had a lot to do with it. I think he’s a class centre and a great player for culture at the club. I’ll be very sad to see him go.

Agree, Leonard. He's one of the few we've got who always puts in. He will be missed. But even though Weidler and others will push this as Manly "bungling" negotiations and another player "wanting out", I'm not sure we could have done much more to retain him. The club has offered him a very good two-year deal. If he thinks he can do better elsewhere - and he probably can - good luck to him.

Just wondering if Rueben generally or for some time now and regardless of other circumstances , just does simply fancies himself more as a centre or full back in preference to being a regular winger
But then with Talau not being re signed [ well at this stage ] more likely he would or could expect to be considered in a centre pairing with Koula so probably does revolve around what extra he or his manager may think he is worth elsewhere
500 or 550 K really would be pretty much the limit he could realistically expect from Manly ,for 27 ongoing ,
W A seems the only option in terms of some increased contract amount and as long as there is the Turbo , Lehi options for either full back , wing in Lehi "s case and Full back , centre for Turbo , - Rueben just down the pecking order a bit both position preference wise and for a balanced cap consideration
Saab the other long term wing choice , inevitable some conjecture on his overall value but on nearly half the money- well a bit above half one would expect ] of Rueben as well no doubt so that has to be factored in

Same, it'd be a massive blunder. He'd be one of the first two guys in our backline selected each week.

Hot take but I'd literally rather lose Turbo than Garrick.

There were suggestions that path needs to be cleared for Large, and I can only hope that's the case. He can run 100m just a tad slower than Koula and faster than Jesse McClean at Penrith. He is big and has all the skills. Given we have Brooks, the Fog signing, and the Joey Walsh debut, it's congested in the halves. Maybe we are clearing the decks for Large to play centre and develop there throughout 27-28, before potentially moving into the halves with Walsh.

I love him as a player (apart from some of his carry on when he gets tackled) and appreciate what he brings in terms of competition.

All that said the club is clearly trying to adress an issue in the pack whichb means some of the money needs to be moved around.

He is 29, a new dad, and needs a long payday so do not begrudge him testing himself on the market as much as I do not begrudge the club holding firm

I think 500K a season is the right number and the club needs to keep focus on managing the roster and our salary cap. I am not of the view the club has bungled anything its just business with a new club with a big cheque coming into the picture. Can't blame Rueben for chasing the money.

I’ve already lost a lot of ‘like’ for rugby league & Manly, although I will continue to support the team. Losing players of the calibre of Garrick, Koula would be another nail in the coffin. Having players hold the club to ‘ransom’, so to speak, is another problem for me. DCE has gone for more money elsewhere, Trbo is having an issue with the money offered to him now. Both Garrick & Koula are on way less than DCE was & Trbo still is! Who adds more value to Manly? For mine Garrick & Koula do. Trbo is brilliant…..if he didn’t spend so much time off the field injured he’d be the best player by miles & would be value! The club allowed one of our better players in Talau to leave….another fu<k up! Why? Why sign Wilson & let Talau go? We have Walsh & the Large brothers up & coming. We have Navale, Hart, Bryan, Laiafi, Pua’avase also. Are we gonna sacrifice these boys as well? This BS about ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’…decimating our backs to sign forwards…is crazy! We will continue to keep Lodge, Waddell, Brown, Brbo, an outdated Jrbo etc. & we will lose our future to other clubs. Other clubs ‘bit the bullet’ & refreshed. Look at the young Broncos, Panthers. Both clubs have given younger players a chance to show what they have. Yes it takes time but now they’re reaping the rewards yet Manly continues to hold onto & sign so called experienced players. WTF has that achieved? This crap about a player being too young or inexperienced blows my mind. Stick them in the deep end & give them a chance. Other clubs do it so why does Manly not? Start fresh with a young mobile team, go thru hard times & learning process then come out on top!

Can only expect Fogarty to mainly be considered at 7 for 26 and could well be partly or to some extent into 27 and Brookes still 2 more years on his contract but if he does start to really press his claims next season , Walsh has to be seriously in line for a 6 role reasonably soon
Know that it had to [ well maybe ] influence Fogarty 's recent signing but going to 3 seasons , again doubt that it will pan out that way into season 3 there as a ist choice 7 and could well be the case for Walsh there even in season 27.
Burbo will almost certainly be in a top 17 inclusion for quite a while yet and not the most highly rated utility out there but still capable in that role

Lots of talent in that team but IMO if we ran with that as our starting lineup in 2026 we win the spoon and wreck a few careers.

Bring em through as they are ready.

Regarding player contracts, players and clubs look out for themselves mostly, Turbo is not holding the club to ransom any more than Garrick or Koula is.

As for Talau...like him but disagree he's is one of our better players and he is not even a certain starter in our 17.

Ideally I'd of kept him but not one I'll lose sleep over.

A lot of our issues stem from this whole "premiership window" that was put out there by the owner and then the coach, which then trickled down to so many decisions around the playing roster.

Most of it has resulted in many short sighted decisions such as recruiting and retaining experienced (i.e old) players.

Interestingly when we re-signed him back in 2022, the club announced it was a 4-year extension to the end of 2027 so not sure what’s happened between now and then for him to be hitting the open market for 2027..

Was only checking the details here because I was sure we gave him quite a decent pay increase to fend off the Knights interest who were rumoured to be offering him a fullback spot. At that point he was a great winger and now he is still a great winger who also had a mostly unsuccessful stint in the centres.

As most have said, if he doesn’t want that very fair deal then let him go, would be sad to see him leave (especially if it were to Parra) but it would be even worse keeping him on overs again and then losing someone like Koula

Yep, I saw the same article. Why is there all this noise if he signed with Manly till the end of 2027 on centre$$?

I agree. I like Reuben and hope he stays but you offer him a decent deal & if he says no you thank him for his service and send him on his way. Koula is the one we have to keep. Just coming into his prime and still on the up.
Whilst I agree Koula is the priority,Manly dont need to compete with the likes RA or Union in general. He had his best year this season and was arguably one of the best centres in the comp, yet Manly still missed the finals. This tells you all you need to know about the impact centres have in the game.Manly aren’t going to match what Union could throw at him, despite their $$ situation, domestically.
