Garrick general news thread

Well deserved.
I really wish he spend an extra hour after training every week kicking practice. Last I saw Fog was around 80% and Garrick was 79%. My Faiders mates hate Foggy kicking because he can't kick from the try line but Garrick can. Most of Foggy kick is right in front so I hope Garrick is our kicker for next year but he needs a lot of practice also to keep his spot now as we have a lot of backs to pick from, KEEP IT UP REUBEN...

Garrick misses heaps of goals he should kick and always chokes on the really important ones that keep pressure on the opposition. He is one of my favourite players but I hope Fogarty kicks next year. I doubt he will though. I suspect with the pressure that comes with being a chief playmaker at a new club, they’ll stick with Rubes.

Fun Fact: As of the end of 2024, Reuben Garrick was averaging 194 points per season (as of right now its 189). Club record holder Graham Eadie averaged just over 147 points per season.

At his current rate if Garrick is retained as the first choice kicker over Fogarty and he remains healthy blah blah blah, he'll probably break Wombat's long standing club first grade record of 1,917 points (71 tries, 847 goals, 3 field goals) sometime around late 2027, but more likely 2028.

Is a better winger than he is a goal kicker or centre

He's a better than average goal kicker as well with a career average of 77.2%. One source identified him as No 22 in the past 50 years with El Masri, Halligan and Cleary at the top. He's well in the top half of goal kickers this year on average. Ridge and Hodkinson were probably the only former Manly kickers to surpass his average. Ben and Andrew Walker and Witt were the only other goal kickers comparable in Manly's history. Though figures don't seem to exist as to Batty's and Eadie's averages, I recall watching them both and doubt they would have surpassed Garrick. Its said Rowles from the early fifties was pretty accurate but again averages not available. DCE has only a little over 71%. Jamie Lyon a little over 70%

Probably goes a little bit better defensively as a winger [ Rubes] but has shown just a very capable footy player whether wing , center or fullback
Still also , one of the best broken field runners in the club .
Certainly going to need however his better level conversion rate going into the next stanza of the season to be able to creep into the 8

Thought that Snoz O " Conner might have been up there too in the Manly better goal kicking stats
But quite a few other notable goal kickers over the years as well Ray Branighan , Tony Melrose and Brendon Reeves must have had quite respectable stats as well , Even Ox Orford may have done O K

I really like him in our side but I'm so much happier with him on the wing. I really think the backline we have at the moment should be the backline we keep moving forward. Turbo and Koula in the centres opens up so much potential for sneaky cross field play on both sides.

Hoppa is only going to get bigger and stronger too.

His goal kicking percentage is good - but yes it feels he is the sort of guy who will kick 8 out of 8 from the side-line in a game we are dominating in - but will miss easier kicks when they matter more.

Not sure where you are getting your stats from but of the 19 players with 20+ conversion attempts this year, Garrick sits 13th with 75.3%. Fogarty is 8th with a touch under 79% and has a career average of 78.7% compared to Garrick's 76.7% and has also had a higher successful percentage in each of the last 4 years.

I suspect some want Garrick to keep the kicking so he can continue to move up the point scoring leaderboard for the club and eventually surpass Eadie's record, but Fogarty is objectively a better goal kicker. I'm not saying Garrick is a bad kicker by any stretch but he's a bit streaky for my liking and cost us a few games over the years we could've won. Definitely not a bad backup option to have though.

Im glad you asked. Rugby League project advises the kicker's success rates as follows:

Orford 71.53%
Reeves 50%
O'Connor - not all St George stats there, but for Manly 66.42%
Melrose & Branigan - before accurate stats were taken

One you didnt think of:
Paul Vautin 100% i.e. 2/2.

More fun wombat facts ... Wombat scored the 1st ever 4 point try in 1983, his final year ... all his previous tries were 3 pointers .. also in the 70's there were 22 games per season as opposed to 24 now.

Batty was a little inconsistent - could get them from the sideline but missed them from in front.
I vaguely recall at one point the goal kicking duties were shared with Derek Moritz (?) with Moritz taking the easy kicks.
I also recall it being said that Batty was on a bonus of $10 per goal - not bad for back then, if true.
