Game plan?

some one made the point about how our coaches should have worked out our defensive structures by now (agreed)
So the point I make is Simply this, every player should be made aware that when you are in the defensive line and you see the ball carrier coming towards you commit early so the rest of the defensive line can react accordingly.
To often we look non committed and flat-footed ,I won't mention there names but watch which players get up out of the line to shut there attack down.
Last year we put in some massive defensive efforts off our line

This opinion assumes that the opposition ball carrier and support runners are on rails and are bereft of any speed, skill, side step, faint, evasion, deception or any power that may/will affect the outcome .....

sometimes, many times it is the timing and skill of the opposition attack that creates the indecision ...good defenders get beaten every week ..

Every club takes the 2 these days, its just the in thing and if its a decently positioned kick and takes you out to 8 or gets you back to 6 then that is the right call 90% of the time.

As for the3 kicking out - worked great last year against the faders having a set defence, wonder how many more points they would have scored against a kick chase defence? If we can't hold out when set then what chance do we have with a broken defensive line?

It is the perfect gameplan for the Raiders imo.
Well done Trent.
Cotric and Rapana, BJ, etc are electrical the back, and hard to handle at the best of times.
Taking them out of the game as much as possible was a great plan.

Unfortunately our defence this year does not seem as sturdy as last year, especially of late, so I feel that we will win more games at the moment by outscoring the opposition (Tigers 2005 style), kicking the ball into touch religiously does not aid that outcome.
Fortunately for me, Trenty seems to have given up on that ploy too, so some kudos there.

Dont forget this thread is about "game plan", thus indicating a "horses for courses" type mentality, and I was specifically giving negative feedback on that game plan v the Dragons for reasons stayed prior.

1st off as a player you wouldn't assume or underestimate the skill of the opposition ...big mistake.
what is important is cutting down time and space the opposition get to run with the ball.
Walkz try against Moylan is a good example, Dce goes at the back to Walkz after Lane runs a decoy which doesn't fool Moylan but instead of pushing forward ,Moylan for a moment is flat footed.
If he had of kept moving forward and put some sought of hit on Walkz (most times it's just slow the attacking player down ) the cover could have arrived.

In reality how important is this game plan you all talk about??

I saw the usual Storm game plan in play last weekend ,you know the one, and guess what, Souths just said “ **** your game plan” we are just going to roll forward and play normal footy.

What was that score again?

"Normal footy" ?
What is normal footy with out a game plan.

If you think that we should go into a game vs Souths exactly the same as a game vs Raiders then I think you need to reconsider.

Raiders back 3 are their main strike weapons.
Souths middle fowards are their weapons.

Can you see how a different strategy to hopefully nullify each opponents strength is considered as a Game Plan ?

BTW, Souths game plan to play up tempo all game, and nullify the Storms efforts to slow the ruck did seem to actually work a treat.

So why don’t teams just play “ up tempo” the whole time?

So why don’t teams just play “ up tempo” the whole time?

Cause teams like us can do it for 15 minutes, then we get an adverse decision or mistake and then fade badly, or momentum swings and we cant handle it, cause our defence is rubbish.
Maybe our fitness is an issue.
Maybe our mental desire is an issue.

It is one of the reasons I hate us taking the 2..we are a very young, confidence team.
Negativity breeds negativity.

Souths are a hardened, recent premiership winning team, full of confidence and self belief.....bit like us in 2011.
