Perhaps potentials are reluctant to become chocolate starfish soldiers. I miss their old $hit brown uniform from the 70s/80s…

They are only doing what every other team in the competition is allowed to do and that is buy a player that they believe will help them win a competition, irrespective of the junior base they have out here.

However, forget about what they are wanting to do on the field, I stand and applaud their board in turning the leagues club around and no, not just from the number of their poker machines.

They've developed a property portfolio that will, in 15 years or so, earn them enough passive income to fund 60% of their entire football department, coupled with the anticipated appreciation in value of their property assets.

The Roosters may be the current billionaires of rugby league, the Panthers are on the prowl and are making progress and catching up.

The amount of money generated by families in this area (Penrith/Blacktown/Liverpool LGA) from sale of farmland is astronomical (the numbers from sale proceeds are eye-watering, and I'm speaking from first hand experience) and most of these families are hard-working families who have remained loyal to the Penrith Panthers.

Success on the field has made them an attractive proposition off the field and they are only going to get stronger.

They've created a fan base of kids between 6 - 16 who are so proud to be a Panthers supporter, who have witnessed 4 grand finals and want that success to continue, so with the thousands and thousands of kids here in our local junior competitions, they WANT to play for Penrith, to be THAT player who will try to ensure that this success continues.

And yet, after all the riches the Panthers have in terms of future NRL stars, they still want the best of the rest, so to speak.

Their squad has depleted over the years however, they have set an expectation of themselves that they will not use that as an excuse.

It has been a remarkable turn around both on the field and off it as well.

As a "westie" I love Manly and nothing will ever change my love for Manly however, I laugh and have a wry smile when people comment on our "socio-economic and demographic standing" in relation to the rest of Sydney, knowing full well, that corporations are falling over themselves to be seen amongst the Panthers community whilst we, as a Club are still battling on that front.

Sorry @MissKate, I went off on a tangent, however I was trying to answer your question from a more holistic perspective of why the Panthers are still chasing players.

NRL boss Andrew Abdo has threatened "serious consequences" towards those found to be contract tampering, with the saga involving young gun Lachlan Galvin heating up.

Like fair enough - but we all now the rules and just because Richardson is still stealing a salary off some club doesn't mean the media have to trumpet this anti tampering rule like it's never been heard of before.

Yet twice the warriors have signed a player very quickly after said players have requested a release, like...magic!

AFB anyone?

I would suggest they understand what kids they have, what they are missing and what they may need.

Also losing as many players as they do and bringing in kids means they have the salary cap room to go after a player they may see as "special"

There was an article earlier this year that Manly were seriously after him!!!

The Mole: Sea Eagles eyeing off Tigers 'wonder boy' as potential Daly Cherry-Evans successor

The Mole
December 27, 2023 - 7.04am

Manly is starting to think about life after Daly Cherry-Evans - and a player high on the wish list is Tigers wonder boy Lachlan Galvin.
DCE played as well as ever in 2023 and still has two years left on his contract at Manly.
But by the time he has completed his 14th and 15th seasons with the club, he will be 36 years old and likely to hang up his boots.

Galvin, 18, is regarded as the premier young halfback talent in the game and will join the Tigers' top-30 squad next season with a view to being blooded in the NRL late in the year.

The Tigers have a high opinion of the Australian Schoolboys rep but also have an abundance of playmakers in their ranks - they have signed Jarome Luai, Jayden Sullivan, Aidan Sezer and Latu Fainu in recent months and also have Adam Doueihi in their ranks.

Having so many playmakers on good money in their squad leads to an unbalanced salary cap and at least one or two will have to go in coming seasons.
Galvin is managed by Isaac Moses - who also happens to handle Manly coach Anthony Seibold - greatly boosting the Sea Eagles' hopes of getting Galvin on board.
No formal talks have been held - but watch this space.
This article from a long time ago starts to become interesting. Our plan from years ago has been to have Galvin replace DCE & a month after he decides to leave Galvin officially says he isn’t extending with Tigers. I reckon we will be heavily linked in the media the next few months.

If Warren McDonnell is still at the club it makes it even more likely, apparently he is close with the family & a big reason he signed the extension a few years back with Tigers. Maybe this is why the club was so relaxed about the negotiations with DCE?

The guy is an absolute gun but surely you would need to throw the Dylan Brown money at him ($1.4m a season)

Not sure this gets us closer to winning a premiership given we need at least 2 marquee forward signings for 2027.

Still think our best chances of meaningful improvement are getting two gun forwards and developing Large and Walsh in the halves.

I've watched him and I just don't get why people are getting so excited about him. He regularly makes the wrong call in attack, like he's trying to add to a highlights reel. Headless chook DCE mkII.
In terms of young halves he's not fit to lace Katoa's boots.
I would sooner have an experienced half alongside Walsh and Large for a couple of years and wait for those two rather than throw the kitchen sink at Galvin

We don’t actually know how much he wants or what the motive is to leave Tigers. I’m sure they would want around $1 mill but if it was purely about money there probably isn’t a team that could outbid tigers currently. (Not including roosters who don’t deal with his manager)

I agree a gun front rower would be a better option for us but Galvin is a generational talent IMO, if there’s a chance I hope the club takes it. Makes some dumb errors like DCE but the difference is he is 17 years younger & it can be coached out of him

I can't see him and Large both fitting if they're in the halves... In one of the options, Large would have to move to fullback or the centres (offloading one of Garrick, Koula or Talau), but this kind of predicament behind Galvin is why Large left in the first place.

The alternative is putting Galvin in the second row or at lock.

Imagine for 2028, in a miracle world;

1. Hopoate
2. Saab
3. Koula
4. Trbojevic
5. Garrick
6. Large
7. Walsh
8. Paseka
9. Muagututia
10. Haas
11. Olakau'atu
12. Galvin
13. Trbojevic
14. Large
15. Navale
16. Bullemor
17. Laiafi

That's an insane roster. Admittedly we definitely can't get both Haas and Galvin, but Galvin has made it clear it's not about money. Jake may have retired by then, but if not, he's surrounded by enough strike, that he can just focus on defence.

This was originally my thread...welcome back old friend. This kid is the real deal, now I don't think we'll get him and I assume he'll go to either Bulldogs or Parra but hope I am wrong. The kids 19 and already light years ahead of most. Boggles the mind if we wouldn't at least have a crack at him. Not sure what people expect from a 19 y/o but to me this kid has most of the attributes you need and he's skillful and tough. But each to their own I guess.

I think if you are doubting this bloke it wont age well. Plus he is only getting better.

The DCE comparison is one I see too - yes they are different positions and different styles of player BUT both are aggressive risktakers with great vision and back their talent. I would argue that Galvin is much more physical now than DCE has ever been and will run a much straighter line already... and he has so much good footy in front of him.

Its 2027 we are talking about and we should have salary cap room around then. He's already better than Brooks and we would be mad not to have a crack IMO.

Overrated to my eye but I didn’t think Cleary was much for the first 3-4 years of his career. I rate Gus Gould’s opinion over mine so if he thinks Galvin is the best young half he has seen, I am not game to say otherwise.

Ok this is on apparently. Galvin is apparently close to Steve Hales and Wayne lambkin. Not to mention the manager.
Pretty sure Weeden (in pathways recruitment) was coach of the Westfields side that Galvin captained to the titled two years ago. Hales and Lambkin formerly of the same footy program. So there’s three ‘in house’ connections.

However, Vella was also part of that program and is at Dogs; Galvin got a tattoo of something Vella taught him and has said he is the reason he is playing NRL. We know Gus is a big fan. I think Dogs could swoop for sure.

Galvin is a good footballer, he would be a welcome addition to any of the other sixteen clubs, I don’t think he would fix the positions that are the cause of the current teams problems here.

Need a front rower with some mongrel, a Lenui prototype would work well, a couple of young forwards that are capable of growing their games and making the most of those opportunities, have some faith that Zaidas Muagututia will solve the hooker problem.

I don’t know if Onitoni is a genuine six, watching him play and with his running speed he would make a very good fullback, the club have a good one here and he should be a genuine priority for the club.

Manly hasn't got a chance in hell of getting him. The club is fast becoming a no-go zone for any real talent that is outside of the junior systems that is on the open market.
