NRL: Richie Fa'aoso rampage sparked by injury despair

November 25, 2013 - 8:10PM
Adrian Proszenko and Nick Ralston

Richie Fa'aoso was charged over a drunken incident just days after he attempted to return to Manly training without a medical clearance for his broken neck.

Fa'aoso was charged over an alleged domestic incident and then leading police on a pursuit through Sydney's south-west while drunk. Fa'aoso's family said in a club statement that "was not a domestic violence matter".

It's understood Fa'aoso's wife, Tori, called police over concerns about the journeyman prop's welfare, rather than her own, after he locked himself in a room alone.

The timing of the incident couldn't have been any worse given NRL identities were supporting the annual Sydney White Ribbon Walk to as part of the campaign to end violence against women.

Those close to Fa'aoso said he has been struggling with depression since suffering a career-threatening injury that forced him to miss the NRL grand final. A fractured C7 vertebra prevented him from taking on the Roosters in the decider and, while he has been publicly upbeat about his chances of a comeback, his future will ultimately be decided by specialists in coming months.

The former Eels, Roosters, Panthers, Raiders, Knights and Sea Eagles has two children, with another on the way, and has been concerned about how to provide for his family if he cannot play rugby league again.

Police said they were called to the NRL player's home at Macquarie Fields at 2pm on Sunday when Fa'aoso, 29, allegedly became involved in an argument with his wife. The Tongan international allegedly knocked over furniture, kicked a door off its hinges and smashed a window before his wife ran off.

Fa'aoso is then alleged to have driven to another house in nearby Ingleburn where the domestic dispute continued, and police were called.

When officers arrived, they tried to stop Fa'aoso as he drove past the premises but he kept driving and a police pursuit began.
He was stopped at Currawong Street at Ingleburn, where he was arrested and was given a breath test.
He allegedly returned a positive reading.

Fa'aoso has been charged with malicious damage, not stopping a vehicle when directed to do so and mid-range drink-driving.
He is due in Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday. He has also been
issued with an apprehended violence order.

The NRL said its Integrity Unit was investigating the matter and assisting with counselling support for Fa'aoso and his family.
The incident became public just as Roosters captain Anthony Minichiello and NRL ambassadors Fenech, Nathan Hindmarsh and Hazem El Masri were involved in the White Ribbon Day Walk.

"We have clear procedures on any behavioural matter, and Manly has complied with those,” NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said.
“There are police matters here that we have to allow to take their course but we are also able to look at some issues and to ensure that there is welfare support for the player and his family.
“Until we do have the opportunity to assess the facts it is not possible to make any further comment.”

In a statement, Manly said: "Richie has the full support of his wife and family, and is presently undergoing counselling.
"Further to this, the family has asked us to make it clear that this is not a domestic violence matter, and that they be afforded some privacy at this time."

Hope that he sorts himself out, his family needs him to be responsible

I am in no way condoning any "alleged domestic violence."

There is always two sides to a story and usually a lot happening in the background and I'm sure there is much more to come out. Regardless of his future in Rugby League he and his family need the NRL to step up to the plate with support in this instance.

#2 Richie Fa'aoso DUI

Don't know where the last thread went but I must say I feel sorry for him. Seems like he might be battling depression sure to his injury. Not the best thing to happen to a journeyman who is nearing the end of his career. Hope he sorts himself out.

RE: #2 Richie Fa'aoso DUI

No surprise the deep thinking RL media linked it straight to the NRL's partnership with White Ribbon. As if signing the agreement would immediately ensure there would never be another incident.

You wonder how much the news of that worthy partnership would have been made had this incident not happened.

tbh most of this stuff should be in the news section of media outlets & leave the RL media types to just report on the game, signings & injuries.

RE: #2 Richie Fa'aoso DUI

Another reason not to listen to that "talk back" crap

RE: #2 Richie Fa'aoso DUI

If only the media did some good by publicly outing every male accused of hitting a woman, then we could see real change in Australia.

What's the Telegraph on about saying NRL players were used for road safety campaigns? When was that? I thought that was the AFL or AFL club & it ended when one got done for drink driving?

There's a simple reason why NRL players are no longer used to promote road safety

JOSH MASSOUD
The Daily Telegraph

THERE's a simple reason why NRL players are no longer used to promote road safety: some have a knack of being arrested for drink driving.

On Sunday afternoon, Richie Fa'aoso gave the NSW Roads and Maritime Service further motivation to avoid the code in future.

No doubt, more facts will be revealed when Fa'aoso fronts Campbelltwon Local Court today.

Watching closely will be White Ribbon, which declined to comment last night. A spokesman described the NRL's effort as "fantastic".

Presumably the NRL would be equally keen to promote road safety. But that choice is no longer in their hands.

NRL star Richie Fa'aoso fronts court after alleged domestic violence incident
BEN MCCLELLAN THE DAILY TELEGRAPH NOVEMBER 25, 2013 3:21PM

CONTRITE Manly Sea Eagles forward Richie Fa'aoso has pleaded guilty to being more than twice the legal drink driving limit but will contest charges of malicious damage and failing to stop when ordered by police following an alleged domestic incident at his south western Sydney home.

The 29-year-old, who was due to receive news on his playing future after breaking his neck in September's NRL finals, apologised outside Campbelltown Local Court today after allegedly smashing a screen door and a bedroom window at his Macquarie Fields home causing his pregnant wife Torise to flee on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a bad decision, I take full responsibility for my actions. I am not a violent person, I would never hurt my wife or kids," he said.

"I just want to apologise to anyone out there that I let down and I thank the NRL, Manly Sea Eagles and my family and friends for their support through this difficult time."

The Tongan International didn't say what caused him to fly into the alleged rage or answer any questions.

Mrs Fa'aoso didn't comment as she left court 10 minutes after her husband was whisked into a 4WD outside the court.

During the brief appearance Fa'aoso pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving after blowing 0.126 in King Rd, Ingleburn, at 3,30pm on Sunday.

He will contest allegations at the same court on January 23 that he knocked over furniture, kicked a rear screen door off its hinges and smashed a bedroom window.

Police allege when he followed his wife to a home in Ingleburn in his car, when police became involved, he failed to stop and and a short pursuit ensued before he stopped near Currawong St on King Rd.

Fa'aoso was also issued with a Domestic Apprehended Violence Order and he must not go near his wife within 12 hours of drinking or taking any illicit drugs, damage any property or harass or intimidate her as conditions of his continued bail.

Manly put out statement yesterday denying there had been any domestic violence and it is understood police were called by Mrs Fa'aoso because she was worried about him harming himself not her.:-/

"The family has asked us to make it clear that this is not a domestic violence matter and that they be afforded some privacy at this time," the Sea Eagles statement said.

The incident has been reported to the NRL Integrity Unit and Fa'aoso is presently undergoing counselling.

It was reported Fa'aso may have been suffering depression since breaking his neck in Manly's finals win over South Sydney, costing him a chance at back-to-back grand finals after playing in the Storm's victorious 2012 side, as well putting his playing future in doubt.

It was one of several head knocks Fa'aoso suffered throughout the season.

The 2009 Tongan player of the year had a turbulent debut season at Brookvale.

He was suspended twice early in the year for a dangerous throw of Rabbitohs fullback Greg Inglis in April, which cost him two months on the sidelines, a month after serving a one-week ban for a shoulder charge on Gold Coast forward Ashley Harrison that knocked the Titan out.

The journeyman has played for seven clubs after the Brisbane born player, who played his junior league for North Aspley, was picked up by Penrith in 2004.

He played one season with English SuperLeague team Castleford before playing 99 games for the Newcastle Knights from 2008 to 2012.

He signed with the Storm in 2012, playing six games, but signed a two-year deal with Manly shortly after signing the short-term deal with Melbourne.

Fa'aoso was born to a Tongan father who is half Samoan and an Australian mother of European background.

Lol. Taking into account that i need to be the thread starter to be able to later delete the thread, i guess there's no more need for me to try and be first post anymore.. But... It was fun while it lasted ;)
It had nothing to do with trying to portray the mods like that though. It was all for self amusement

Rich must have a short memory, or he really was temporarily insane. No Queenslander in his right mind is going to kick a screen door off its hinges. Remember the flies, moths and mozzies Rich?? Oh for Heavens sake Richie.....think of the children!!!

Kids are impressionable. Mine were scared when I punched the couch in rage during the grand final. I feel bad about it and it was a wake up call about setting a good example. It may be a funny story in future years but it upset them at the time.

I asked him. He did, in fact delete it. He said something about not liking where the discussion was headed. Pretty disappointing. I deleted my post, which was the first post in my thread but now the 30th in this thread as I didn't want my thread to be associated with his dribble. I don't know if I'll bother posting in the Reni Maitua thread because he gets some sort of gratification in deleting them. He's a habitual thread deleter. Frankly, it disgusts me. He's probably deleted more of my posts than you lot :p

I don't know how to do a rolling eyes emoticon, so this will have to do.
