Enablers vs Match Winners

believe it was he who pounded Sattler's jaw in the gf

Squasher was WAAAY after the Sattler days.

As an aside I still see Sattler occasionally, he, or connections must own the Pub at Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island as I've seen him serving behind the bar on more than one occasion.

By the way that pub would be worth an absolute motza, fabulous views overlooking Cylinder Beach, heaps of accommodation, huge bar and massive restaurant.

Probably worth $40 million at least!!

Excellent question @wombatgc

I don't know that I have either in the Enabler bucket...... No way is Cliffy an Enabler - he was an absolute match winner through and through.

of the 'holy trinity (Menzies, Gartner and Koref) I would have had Gartner in the Enabler bucket.
Harsh?
Its a good post @Harmless27 , it does make you look at things from a different perspective.
I think they're going overboard on the stats. I think the commentators have a brief from there director to sprout stats adnausem.

Yeah, Green is doing a great job at taking the heat off DCE and putting the defence in two minds. In fact there have been several games this year where Green has been the go to man on the last tackle. My initial reaction was WTF, why aren't they going to Cherry. It has enabled Cherry to have maximum impact. If you compare this season to last season sure you would find that DCE has had double the impact with half the amount of ball. Green is a superb signing and further proof that people who have lived the game (ala Bozo) see things with much more clarity than us supporters.
Agree Kev Green has done his job and has had a few excellent kicking games creating lots of dropouts and good field position ala Storm style. Defensively however he is not at first grade standard for one on one tackles close to the line. And given our occasional ineptitude at coping with those sweeping block plays hes often isolated and targeted with no one assisting him. One thing i have noticed is there must be a pretty fair defensive coach here atm as many of our players are now 'tree choppers' cutting blokes in half down low. Not just Jakey but Api busted legs all day recently and a few others have been developing that skill too. Greeny isnt strong enough to wrap up the ball player up high and get him on the deck. He just needs to work hard at getting lower in readiness for the tackle. Look at Api recently and hes basically on the deck in readiness when a player is still a metre away approaching him. Ya cant run without legs!

The best 'enabler' of recent times IMO is Matty Ballin. Didn't run the ball a huge amount, didn't have many offloads or line breaks. But what he did do was, firstly, give brilliant ball service to his forwards and halves. Anyone running off Ballin could concentrate on what was in front of them because he would put the ball right on their chest every time. Secondly, he was good for 50 tackles a game, meaning his big forwards didn't have to make as many. This is exactly why he was selected in Origin to replace Smith. They didn't need a Farrah type player who wanted to be a hero and pull off the miracle play, they needed someone to get clean ball to Thurston and Co and tackle everything that moved.

A few people say this about Green but I might have missed it. I know there was the Souths match or maybe Saints when we were run a bit ragged but doubt he was the only culprit there. Can you recall any examples of his failures close to the line? I ask as I recall him making a sensational try-saver in last year's grand final!

Apologies for the late entry to the discussion - been in England too long (mushing my brain). Wonderful to hear all the love for Ian Martin. Agree with all said. Seems low tacking is indeed coming back somewhat these days and we have some excellent practitoners esp. Jake T and Api K. Ian Martin was only bettered by the great one in going in low, seriously low, front-on, on oncoming gronks. Takes guts to drive in at those oncoming knees. He was in the Tooves category of fearless. But he could also play, coming into the back row from five eighth.

One anecdote: he was coming back from injury later on in his career, probably 76 or 77, and had to come via reserves which caused a bit of a stir at the time. So he ran out at 1.30pm and I can still recall the brutal punishment he handed out to the opposition forwards bringing the ball up. Was back in First grade the following week.

As to enablers, absolutely. It's a team game and so everyone has to be a good enabler mostly, or you have to carry them. Very few players are worth that for any period of time, but if you have a strong enough team you can have someone like Lord Ted Goodwin, or Choppy Close (pretty useless except for running hard with the footy at exposed backlines), or even Crusher Cleal. Really, most of the best superstars were also outstanding enablers, doing the simple things perfectly and making other players excel.

Was referring to Norm Pounder... but apparently it was John Bucknell. Ah how the reds have tempered my few remaining brain cells

A mate and former Eagles player of the day told me they'd inflate Crusher's tackle counts so he'd be picked for SOO ;-) Damaging runner of the ball no doubt. To me he was more the luxury match winner than the enabler and at the time we could afford him mostly with the 'superstar' lineup we had -- players like that can be a liability when it really counts though. I note we didn't win any premierships with that superstar team of the early 80s.
