Enablers vs Match Winners

on a similar note Norm Pounder in the late 60's ... a tireless hard working forward who played well above his weight and never received the accolades that the 'stars' did
Didn't see Norm Pounder play, and the absence of old footage is what skews it toward modern day players. I am sure there were many, many, many more worthy candidates whose names are never uttered on this modern social media vehicle, called a FOR HUM

Welcome back Forty, things have been a bit peaceful without you.

Memory is an unreliable friend, but I remember him as just getting on with the job, tough and unrelenting. I don't think his domination was a demonstrable thing ... he didn't go around belting blokes or grandstanding ..it was just at the end of the game you realised he had been as solid as a rock.
A true enabler! Like your right hand, man

You would have seen more of him than me Woodsie I was away at Boarding school most of the time. I remember thinking years ago up on the hill at Lottobrook that the harshest critics of the players were the ones who looked like they never laced on a boot themselves. Could be faulty memory though !

Late 60's early early 70's I used to sit on the hill with a bunch of 18yo mates and we bagged the crap out of everybody, poor Mr Magoo Hannigan etc.

When I started playing lower grades I would go back to the hill after u/23's but for some reason the blokes bagging the crap out of players was no longer funny. I eventually stopped going to the hill and would just stay over in the dugouts.

I accept and apologise to fellow Silvertails that pay there money and are entitled to voice their views at players, but once you had seen the pain and effort a lot of these blokes went through it just seemed less appropriate.
Often it was the players who were borderline FGer's that put in the most effort but were never quite good enough that got bagged the most.

Sorry about the "sharing", didn't mean to go all holy.

Ian Martin, Ima, wouldn't fiqure in too many of the Manly's greatest team lists ... but I can assure you he was one of the first picked every week.

It is one of the reasons I get p11ssed off occasionally. No team can find or afford 17 Jakes. Every team need the honest toiler that gives his best. To bag a bloke like Starling just because he is not as good Brent Kite just seems a dog act to me.

Loved him as a player tough as nails

If anyone watched The Back Page last night, Craig Johnston was their special guest .
For those that don't know he was pretty much the first Australian to really make it in old English Premier League ( Soccer ) .

By his own admission he said he was the worst player in the best team and a commentators description of him was "like a bee in a bottle".

He said that teams need those bees in the bottle - a team of prima donnas wouldn't get the job done but essentially players like him enabled the suoerstars to be,,well, superstars.

Kind of why the Storm have been so successful, Bellamy is pretty good at identifying "enablers" to complement Slayer, Cronk, Smith,
Des even did it with our golden run - Mauro, Hall, Bryant ,Willo etc

The sum of the parts enable teams to flourish and that's the key.

Didn't see that but he does have an interesting story.

Saving Adidas with the predator that he invented after trying to coach youngsters in the wet.

Yeah, Green is doing a great job at taking the heat off DCE and putting the defence in two minds. In fact there have been several games this year where Green has been the go to man on the last tackle. My initial reaction was WTF, why aren't they going to Cherry. It has enabled Cherry to have maximum impact. If you compare this season to last season sure you would find that DCE has had double the impact with half the amount of ball. Green is a superb signing and further proof that people who have lived the game (ala Bozo) see things with much more clarity than us supporters.

edit @Woodsie I meant to add that I agree with you (obv...you say) but interacting with a heap of athletes over here...you really see it from the ground up. The time, money, sacrifice, and maybe some success, generally with parents supporting from behind (esp with the $$$.) It's incredibly tough.

After the Titans game on Saturday some of the players made their way over to thank the fans who had gathered on the fence.

What I liked was Cherry and Green deep in conversation in the middle of the field by themselves for a long time.

Just talking footy.

Cliffy and Beaver....who is the enabler, who is the match winner?

Excellent question @wombatgc

I don't know that I have either in the Enabler bucket...... No way is Cliffy an Enabler - he was an absolute match winner through and through.

of the 'holy trinity (Menzies, Gartner and Koref) I would have had Gartner in the Enabler bucket.
Harsh?

I love that @COMMANDER

This season our team is all about the footy. There are no factions on the field..... there is a common cause. I actually think we would have been doing just as well last year had we had that same focus, attitude and harmony - but alas, it wasn't to be.

These next few years are what we should judge our marquee player on - and I have a feeling that if DCE continues to get the kind of support he is getting from Green et al, he will prove that the contract we gave him was worth EVERY cent.

Hell - look at the stupid money being thrown around for average players at the moment.... in two years time, Cherry will still be on $1m for us, and some other 22 year old muppet who hasn't won a premiership will be commanding $1.3m at parra hahaha

Ian Martin was a rock solid defender which puts him head and shoulders above Green.
