Did you know??

I don’t mind our top try scorer not cracking double figures but it would be better if it meant our whole squad of 30 finished on 9 tried each.. just wasn’t the case this year.

Whose the pick for Manly’s top try scorer in 2019?
Turbo? Taufua? Anderson?
A surprise signing or debutant?
Plenty of time to wonder..

Seems like a lifetime ago that Phil Blake scored I think 28 tries in a season, those were the days ......
Blake had incredible acceleration , pace and a sharp step . Great to watch him leave players for dead .
Nothing more exciting to watch than a speedy player

and if I'm not mistaken Suli scored one try from 13/14 matches. I'll bet there is no other centre in the NRL who played a similar amount of matches with such a low strike rate.
The kid has potential, but it's not as a back.

Not for one minute am I suggesting a comparison ...... but your post reminds me of when the club announced the signing of a Canberra winger who had scored something like 12 tries in 60 games ..... at the time I said you are kidding me ..... but then again Michael Robertson ended up going OK.

In Matai and Lyon We have been blessed for the past decade with two of the best centres and creative fullbacks in the clubs history ..... I imagine that if Suli was outside either one he would bag a brace of tries per game ..... but then again my sainted mother at 91 could probably score a couple per game outside Jamie Lyon.

We have been spoilt .... we are back to the pack.

The most telling stat was the tries scored by the 3/4s and full back. In 2017 those five positions scored 59 tries. In 2018 the total was 34 (Walker scored one as 5/8). That's a 40% drop in tries being scored outside of 5/8. Mind you Manly managed to keep its 2017 outside backs stable for much of the season and consequently four players scored 10 or more tires with Kelly scoring 8. In 2018 no player exceeded 10 tries with Tommy T highest on 9 and Kelly 7. Though our backline suffered a lot more injuries in 2018, it still shows the impact of not having a ball playing five eighth. Tries scored were also almost all the result of individual brilliance rather than strategies

TT, Anderson or Wright

Try Assists turbo 19 DCE 16 kelly 6 api 5 and 4 players with 3 then the rest with 1. So basically Tom and DCE are the only players generating good try assist numbers.

Dylan walker needs to stay in the centers with Kane Elgey at 5/8 should help, we might need to find some better wingers though.

So, did Suli have one try assist?
That was more than I thought.

Unfortunately you can't teach speed, even an average player like Scott Donald, once in the clear looked like a star, but an average player with no speed will always look like an average player.

Anticipation also Bozo!!
You know that thing where players support the ball carrier and time their run into a gap we rarely seen in 2018 ??
Blake was all over it....some players just smell the right timing/moment.....Barba has it.....Slater hate him or not has it also, along with flying studs....

You are spot on there Pete !!!
Super Speed Athletes are born . It is all about having the right genetics .
Olympic Sprinters possess about 80% fast twitch fibers whilst those who excel in Marathons have 80% slow twitch fibers .
If you dont have the right genetics make up speed training can only take you so far . Every one does speed training in team sport but not everyone has Super Speed.
A player with supreme speed can win a game in a blink of an eye from anywhere on the field.
SPEED THRILLS !!!

Pretty sure Phil still holds the most tries scored in consecutive games at 10 (suck it Cooper!). Nothing beats a Blake chip and chase.
