Defence effort best part of Win

The Cows are a very good attacking side and Manly looked on a mission defensively, shutting them down well all night.
Cows had an "off" night, but I feel they are a team who fold when under the pump and Manly, led by solid defence, won the game on the back of tackling hard and often all night and interesting to see had numbers, which slowed the ruck....have not seen this for who knows how long ?
Anyways have the attack to trouble any team and if the defence continues to muscle up, could make it an interesting season

Agreed. Didn’t get much thrown at us but it’s the most pleasing win of the year for mine because we kept them to single digits.

Would love to see more of it, I think this whole “score more points than them” attitude is wearing thin on most of us.

100% fact Stewbojevic, I mean have now witnessed a few seasons where we beat the dud teams by 50 and then come finals...we struggle.
It's like once the intesity rises and the footy comes down to old fashion grit, field position and dogged defence, we kind of get out armwrestled....and i think it's because during the season we play such a "pretty" style of footy.
Sure it's entertaining and to see 90m tries is exciting at the time, this style come finals or bigger games leads to errors gifting field position....allowing opposition ascendency and they keep foot on throat as we diminish in energy which is visible at the time and also unfortunately, the resistance defensively seems to cave in and from there heads drop and it "falls apart" and its usually a 36 - 12 type full time score against us.
Hopefully this game can be used as a springboard moving forward, setting the bar to keeping opposition below 12-16 points and will be in ANY game.

I've said it a bit in different threads. You can see coaching staff are looking to change the playing style for Much of the year. More percentage play, grind out wins with the defence. Even in our losses there has been things to like that's new. We were good in patches against the sharks but cracked. They put plenty on the storm. So they may be a good sign.

Hard to gauge the cows, given new halves they looked terrible in attack, but just may be we do need some credit for the defence.

Our defence was excellent and the most pleasing part of our win. If we start producing this consistently I will be very happy switching across to the pro Siebold camp.

Did you notice Seibs (who is usually relatively subdued) going off his head when DCE threw the miracle ball to Tom with five minutes still on clock the other night? It looked like he mouthed ‘why are they trying to score?’

I was wondering the same thing. We’ve got the ball and the lead and there’s five minutes left; you hold onto the ball as long as you can because the opposition can’t score without it!

I was thinking maybe Seibs is fed up with Daly’s ‘caution to wind’ approach and is looking forward to Fogarty’s steady game management, given it’s more in line with a style he’d like to adopt for the team…who knows…just a theory.

Could be. Daly is what he is, and Seibs might have told Mestrov we simply cannot offer this guy as much as he's worth on the open market because he isn't what this Manly team needs right now. Hence DCE nose out of joint, so he says goodbye.
If indeed that's how it went then... credit to Seibold imo.

Coach killer Chez... Think about the great men that have fallen since his debut.. The great De$ -twice, Tooves, T-bag and now Sea-behold looks to be struggling to contain or coach this rebel halfback. But seriously,
I do wonder how coachabe DCE is.. We might find out soon if he plays a Robbo- rooster style game plan or if he will continue to play 'Cherry Ball'

I'm looking forward to picking up a premierehip winning Fogarty next season. The raiders, dogs, sharks and Melbourne all have halfbacks that follow a game plan
It'll be refreshing

I think great point.
I mean personally I rate DCE a very good player in his own right, but he offers a far more flambouyent style, not so much a controlled style, he didn't fluke his selections at the highest level, but thing is at rep level he has 16 "world class" players around to allow him to balance the game styles and help get away with playing 'trickshot" footy, at Manly and most NRL sides this is not the case.....and this is the exact style that can bring up Massive scores against the also rans, but on the flip side, get strangled like a python vs the gritty teams who play more direct and "build" pressure on the back of completions, field position, kicking game and rugged defence.
Just maybe due to the Manly style and not going to simply put it on DCE, but the fancy Manly footy only carries the results so far, till the cruch time of the more rugged games and then the flashy game plan implodes.
IF Manly can get into the more attrition style of play, there are X factors like Tom T, Oka, Koula who can swing the games momentum, rather than the often desperate style of footy every set, that can break down creating a snowball effect as heads drop, suddenly dropping by 10-16 points after being in an even contest....and I've seen this a few times in recent seasons....and pretty confident the coaching staff at Manly have this stuff noted and are moving forward with this in mind....

Throwing away possession with low percentage plays early in the tackle count has been his trait and has frustrated me endlessly. Time for a change and Fogarty will bring it.
