Coach Seibold thoughts so far.... so good

Look, I'm not Seibs biggest fan, but I'm not sure I'd take that much pleasure in his demise.

I think Seibold is part of the problem, but not in some short sighted ‘he’s won a spoon’ ‘he is accountable’ ‘he’s mediocre’ kind of childish rhetoric.

Rather, he has ability but backed the wrong horse. I see a couple of issues:
1. He has a bit of Brian Smith’s overly-analytical approach to the game. He saw the rule changes/interpretations as an opportunity to leave a mark by pioneering a new approach to the game; one where the ball is shifted out of yardage to speedy edges and risk is encouraged to outscore the opposition in a game where points are inevitable, due to the increased speed and momentum in the game.
2. He is short-term oriented due to his previous sacking at the Broncos. There’s very little happening in our pathways and the two promising rookies we had, were shipped off to another club. Hoppa is the only serious emerging prospect at the club. The signings and/or re-signings of Brooks, Lodge, TKO, Woods, Aloiai, and co. are a sign of where Seibs head is at. Experience to offset the rookie disaster at Brisbane. Basically, why build when you might be sacked before the house is completed.

On the other hand, Ciraldo and Gould went about recruiting lean and mobile athletic types, with a game plan built on high energy defence. Unlike Seibs, they backed the right horse; the horse that has been winning since 1908.

Dogs secret weapon seems to be that they actually enjoy and want to defend. They want to act like a horde of locusts and hurt and harass every ball carrier. And in every carry they want to accelerate into contact. Basically want to win every tackle with and without the ball.

It's apparent that this is a mindset Ciraldo has set as a basic that every player has to agree to buy into, and they have. Pretty basic but effective, in fact it's pretty impressive.

The talents of some individuals are merely cherries on top.

They had a number of forwards missing yet beat a tough Chooks side by wearing them down, there was a sense of inevitability about it even well before half time I thought.

Nailed it. I would also add a lack of something else that's a little less quantifiable.

Historically, successful NRL head coaches have a quiet confidence in their leadership - they evoke an aura of respect, a little fear, and are great man managers. They keep their messaging simple, with an emphasis on selfless courage. They are themselves fit, stern, and focused, and their players feel the need to earn their coach's respect. A little traditional and patriarchal, but it's a style that stands the test of time when leading young men in a high performance environment. It takes a special combination of qualities to fit this mould. Unfortunately, Seibold does not.

Actually, Anthony Seibold physically last coached the Broncos in Round 13 of the 2020 NRL Series (65% of the season for 3 Wins & 10 Losses) and Peter Gentle physically coached them from Round 14 up to and including the final round, Round 20 (the remaining 35% of the season) and he didn't win a game in those final 7 games.

When Seibold last coached the team, they were in 15th spot, and they remained there until Round 18. The following week (Round 19) they lost again, and the then last placed Bulldogs beat the Rabbits which then put the Broncos into last place, and the eventual winner of the wooden spoon at the conclusion of the final round the following week.

Seibold officially stepped down on the 26th of August 2020, after he had spent the previous two weeks in home isolation after having to step out of the Project Apollo bubble for a serious family matter.

During those two weeks away, he reflected on his role at the Broncos and the impact it was having on his life away from rugby league.

Broncos CEO Paul White said at the time: “For the remainder of the season, Peter Gentle will continue to coach the team, as he has done for the past fortnight."

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that Seibold was not sacked, he quit.

I agree, and I said pretty much the same things in another thread earlier. There is nothing the Dogs are doing that we couldn’t emulate - all comes back to coaching and attitude. They also recruited smart (focussing on players with the right attitudes). Not rocket surgery.

There has been a suggestion Mestrov and Seibold were mates before Seibold got the gig. If that is true then that would make sacking him tougher. My view is he must see out the season and if DCE is not released before 30 June then the club deserve a significant portion of the blame.
