It's been revealed Manly Sea-Eagles superstar player Daly Cherry-Evans has requested a release from his contract over his salary, a reported $85,000 - significantly lower than his peers, or his market value.
As MG says, "he's the hottest prospect and commodity in NRL at the minute" and he could secure a significantly higher salary elsewhere, though to lose their star halfback would be a tragedy for Manly Sea-Eagles fans.
"Just before kick off the other night, you were offered a four deal by Manly. You said no, what were you thinking?" Johns asked Cherry-Evans on FOX recently.
"We're obviously trying to get something sorted as soon as possible, at the moment it's not what we're looking for," the young player responded.
"What was so unacceptable about the Manly offer?" Triple M's Mark "MG" Geyer asked Daly Cherry-Evans' manager Gavin Orr this morning.
"It really came down to the first two years of a new contract. Twelve and thirteen weren't going to be lifted by that much. As you know, his market value has gone through the roof. Two years ago, there wasn't a club interested in signing Daly. I know that sounds hard to believe but that was the case," Orr explained.
After a year that saw his team win the premiership and his fortunes change significantly, it's understandable Cherry-Evans is considering his options.
However, according to NRL journalist Paul Kent, "Manly's financial position is perilous."
"The way the salary cap works - a lot of Manly contracts are back-ended, and we're coming to the pointy end of the stick... At the moment, Manly are trying to do their best to sort that out," Orr said. "They can't offer Daly [on the cap] any more money for this year or next year," he added.
Matty Johns suggests the South Sydney Rabbitohs will be the team to poach Daly Cherry-Evans.
