Buzz: Salary Cap is not working

There is a player that hasn’t even played 1 first grade game on that top 50,that’s how little credibility the list and it’s author has
My thoughts exactly. He does this every year, and every year I am left shaking my head.

All contract offers should be centralised through the NRL and then players wages published like other professional sports.

If Kotoni Staggs is off contract the NRL gets all formal offers

800k from Tigers
700k from Bulldogs
700k from Manly
650k from Parra
500k from Brisbane
500k from Roosters

Now that doesn't stop The Roosters paying and extra 300k a season in brown paper bags but it does make it crystal clear to the NRL what every team is offering (legally) and highlights suspicious activity

This Rothfield idiot will keep writing this garbage for as long as it pays his bar tab.

He is an opinion-piece ****-talker. Nothing more.

That recent clash with Cooper Cronk tells you everything you need to know about the POS. Who the hell is he to question Cronk on anything?

I'd actually prefer none of his garbage polluted our lovely boards here - he is nothing to our club, thinks nothing OF our club, and is sustained only by clickbait opinion pieces.

ugh feel dirty even posting in this one.

The inequality of the NRL is a dirty little secret the NRL plans to keep , so it keeps its fans under the illusion of a fair and equitable contest.

Unless it was led by a massive fan boycott it will continue to find convenient half truths as to why it can not publish these lists

Its impossible to police as even players would have to dob themselves in for tax evasion . A few token scalps to keep up its act and let the rest flow. If its not broken dont fix it.

The clubs too poor to compete will eventually be squeezed out to accomodate super franchises with new money to grow the pie

2 of my favourites are the paper clip and the clothes peg (spring model).
Not sure if they pre-date sliced bread, but pretty sure they came after the wheel.

This is why we need a wealthier benefactor. You need coin to work around the cap, and the NRL
Even before the penns its clear manly fans would love manly to death.
Big money , somewhere else than brookvale to be a powerhouse

The club needs to rid itself of the hate, invest in new fans and income streams and get professional off field.

While i love brookie and understand the fascination i never see us being a superpower based there. At some point new teams with more money, clout and potential fans will come knocking and we are on the bottom rung

Change is hard to accept, extinction harder
More importantly we need a wealthy Board. Compare Roosters versus Manly or Souths versus Manly.

Roosters Board has a approx personal wealth combined value in excess off $500 million. I wonder how many of their players have non existent jobs as Marketing managers and just turn up to events? Ours would be a fraction.

I wonder how much those board members claim back as tax write offs for money "donated" to Uncle Nick's golf days & the various other clandestine ways they pay the players outside of the cap?

It is working ... no clubs have gone bankrupt chasing a premiership since it was introduced ... and that was the ONLY reason it was introduced ..

The salary cap is failing to stop the NRL from descending into a lopsided English Premier League-style competition where the big clubs dominate and struggling teams are unable to close the gap.
That’s the opinion of rugby league analyst Matthew Johns, who fears administrators will be unable to turn around the worrying trend, which has only been amplified in recent seasons.

As @Woodsie suggested above the cap was originally brought in NOT to even the competition but to ensure clubs didn’t go broke.

If every club adhered exactly to the cap there would be a more even competition.

So the cap has worked in one sense but not worked on another, which is why I’d like to see the salary cap changed to a “ salary grant “ and a points system introduced to even up the comp.

Until that’s in place you’ll have the haves and the have nots and very sadly we are in that second bunch.

Maybe it needs twigging . Paid by the league instead of a draft
finish 16th extra mill in cap for 2 years
Finish 15 th extra 800k in cap for 2 years
Finish 14 th extra 700 k in cap for 2 years
Finish 13 th extra 600k in cap for 2 years

Teams nominate extra payment players and there contracts must end at 2 year period or sooner to allow offloading them if required

Finish 12th to 8 th , double long serving player allowance for next season

Anyone who says its not fair docked money from grant so the nrl can but diamond rings for nominated spouse of poor performing clubs.
