AFL memberships is quite incredible. Over 100,000 members for Richmond and the AFL’s Club second lowest membership is more than the NRL’s third highest.

Yeah, we compete in NSW against rugby and in the last 20+ years against AFL. But our club membership is not a shadow on AFL or game attendance.

Next level down there, you’re not a fan if you’re not a member.

Yeah such a piss poor sport game and forcy backs. Watching rugby wc japan v ireland and 50 thousand fans i prefer that.

Had this argument with someone on facebook. You cannot compare AFL and NRL for Crowds and Memberships as it is all linked to the TV experience. AFL is not attractive to watch on TV so fans go to games to watch it, hence the large crowds. Membership is a traditional thing that is tied in with wanting to keep your seats at the ground, so with so many going to games and wanting to keep seats etc you get high memberships. NRL on the other hand is so good on TV most fans enjoy seeing everything happen on TV. Low crowds are down to the TV experience being so good that people won't bother going to games they watch on TV, thats why 4 out of 8 top rating events on TV are NRL. Memberships are linked to getting passes to matches and seating so if you enjoy watching on TV then a lot of people don't see the point in buying memberships. NRL consistently out rates other codes on TV however TV rating aren't as fancy to look at as full stadiums.

Yes, they get big crowds and there’s a reason........................

Have you ever been to bleak city? There’s sweet F’all to do, no beaches, harbour, etc. and the weather’s sh*t as well. So, they’ll turn up to watch anything that’s mildly entertaining; tiddely winks would draw 50,000 on any day of the week, just to relieve the boredom or so that you can imagine that you’ve anywhere else in Australia or the World.

I'm down here and the atmosphere at Brookie/Lotto , especially a weekend arvo, with 10,000 beats a 40,000 crowd anywhere here.

And a lot of these.AFL ' Memberships' (I'm not sure how the NRL counts it) are 3 game packages like $60 .. Just like they count Auskick in the junior numbers where really in the main its a social thing, kick ang giggle and only very few go on to play proper AFL from say U9 onwards.

So a bit of smoke and mirrors . In Melbourne anyway

Of course there are the Bronco type two team towns like Perth and Adelaide who have massive support .

The AFL is an attractive proposition for TV rights as the game goes maybe nearly double time to a NRL game and a freeking ad break after every goal (10-20 goals a game for example)

The AFL is a huge industry with lots of hangers on, rent seekers, bloated staffs Virtue signalling Departments concerned more about condesending Rainbow and Racism days and huge loss making Womens AFL rather than grassroots junior or country football ,and the clubs have to support this plus playing lists far larger than NRL clubs and each club seems to have more coaches than Cobb and Co .

Also, the two grounds in Melbourne are right Next to 3 big train stations . Imagine having a 50,000 seat stadium opposite Town Hall station. NRL would get the crowds too.

Just saying the AFL while the numbers look good , do struggle with $ especially in Melb with the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda type clubs. They need about a 25,000 crowd to break even.

Despite Toddy wanting to take NRL down a similar road, I hope the NRL still retains its suburban roots - which is its character - and why we still love the game

The reality is we are a very successful club . The most successful club in the modern era

The reality is our club membership numbers are pathetically the lowest in the NRL

The reality is that we have always been down on club membership numbers and this is a fan cultural thing

The reality is that Des came in and changed the footy culture and we are evolving to greater heights

The reality is that we need to change with the times and come out of our comfort zone and be more proactive and think out side the square

The reality is our full fan base potential is not just the Northern beaches any more , it spreads from the North Shore up to the Central Coast .

The reality is territorially we have a Gold mine at our disposal and we need a Des Hasler cultural change in our Marketing to get the most of the people of our territory

The reality is the biggest asset in any organization is smart proactive people

The reality is the world and the NRL is always changing and we need to adapt and change with the times in order to evolve

THE REALITY IS PROGRESSION IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT CHANGE AND THOSE WHO DO NOT CHANGE WITH THE TIMES GET LEFT BEHIND

Melbourne is actually really well planned out, public transport and all so it's understandable. Sydney on the other hand...

Rugby League could be a No 1 code if it was handled well in publicity, distribution of finances, effective junior policy, effective country league policy, rule changes to reduce discretionary powers of referees, more proactive managerial strategies, not reactive, better business minds at the top, expansion to at least 24 teams over the next 10-20 years, promotion of off shore games etc etc. Most of these are ignored by the myopic, insular, slap dash, duplicitous and partial roles of those running this fine game. The game needs a major clean up of its administration and its refereeing system and someone up there with a vision to take the game to the next level. First move get rid of Greenberg and Annesley

I lived there for four years and bleak is the correct word. Great to be back home

It’s a hilarious game to watch, someone back in the day must have seen a bunch of seagulls fighting over a chip and wanted to replicate it

Is so lame how they are going for “the flag” as well

I had to go to Melbourne for work a while ago and the standard "How's the weather" conversation is "what footy team do you support" ... "how good were xxx on the weekend"

On the one hand they were one dimensional aliens to me and on then other I had to marvel at how deep the level of support ran.
