Back in the real world, parents have a one window of influence amongst many others that they cannot control.

Our whole society is responsible for raising our kids.

Here's a couple of problems.

(1) the parents own gambling leads by example (if not, we wouldn't have a demand that supported the bucks sunk into advertising by gambling institutions). So, here's somebody considering the problem and making a responsible effort to face it, and your response is to suggest he's just too "lazy" to parent?
(2) while you may scare the **** out of a 7 year old (which is problematic in itself), how do you effectively communicate that to a teenager, considering the conflicting messages between you as a parent and glorified sports.

And using language like "get on the blower" and "put a couple of bets on" is loaded. It softens a very serious issue, making it all casual and manly (no pun intended). There is nothing casual nor manly about gambling IMHO.

I would at least acknowledge the concern, even if I didn't agree with the strategy, rather than dumping on him.

Now excuse me, I need to ask my well-drilled fearful kids to sit in the car while I hit the casino to have a little flutter on the tables....
