Yes, Marty B has a contract, and he has been wonderful for us, over a long period. 50+ tackles per match. We all have respect for him.But he ain't gettin any younger, and coincidentally this injury comes along at a time when it seems the Club is ready to move on.to new players in the forwards. Sometimes it's wiser to go in the direction that fate seems to suggest - put your energies into that. Marty will handle the transition from player to conditioning coach easily.

Not sure big old Marty Bella will make a good conditioning coach, big change in the game since he played but you never know.

Hodges has been playing well in NSW Cup, and is a running hooker in the vein of Luke - but the wet weather won't help his scoots against Easts.
Hugh Pratt from our Under 20's is a good prospect. Very tough, energetic, rans from dummy half and rives the team from the engine room. Not to mention he is a passable goal-kicker.

I'm thinking Matty B will stay, do the rehab and fight for his spot. You're a long time retired and as Captain Grub, Ennis & co. have shown hookers can still be very competitive well into their 30s.

You are a long time retired. And finding the right time to retire is a challenge. If the Penns offered Matty a career opening which suited that long time of retirement from playing, Matty would be foolish to not strongly consider it. The fit between Matty's current long term career plans and the club's needs seems to be strong.

Matty's people skills and personal attributes set him up as someone who would be a fine asset, especially in a team-based environment.

As Matty is contracted for 2 more years, he can take his time recovering from the ACL :)

All the best wishes for a great Manly Player

He has a 1 year contract with a 1 year option and that option will only be activated if he play's 13 first grade games. The club wants him gone he is refusing (which he is entitled 2) but he will not be getting the second year.

Rumour has it our next conditioning coach has come down to two candidates. Marty Bella and George Rose.

If Marty can run 50 metres faster than George can run the 100 (George is more current), the job is his. All training runs will apparently be across Pittwater Rd to the Maccas for Marty's dinner and back :p

Let's hope common sense prevails and both Penns and Matty come to an amicable resolution. The last thing we want is Matty digging his heels in and jeopardising our year next year. He will be clearly past his best by then. He has an unblemished record with Manly, a true gentleman !

Has the NRL closed the loophole on sudden retirements ala Mark Gasnier who have years to run on their contracts (or in his case back ended contracts)??

If Matty suddenly retired, there'd be no backending issues, so if the NRL objected, it would be out of control, there'd have to be an investigation.

He could be the next Donny Singe

It shows what type of player Matty is. He played on during a game last year with a broken leg. Yesterday he does his ACL and then goes back on the field and tries to play until he collapses. He has guts and determination. A great work ethic and a true Manly man.

Who better to be the strength and conditioning coach at Manly?
Also can be the runner on the field .......probably be a better coach out there than most in the NRL.
Great rapport with fans and players. Only problem being the broom sweeping through the club.
Hierarchy may not want current mob involved?

The Mona Vale Raiders were at Brookie yesterday, along with proud Dad Matty.:inlove:
Luke Trbojevic was the referee :)

I knew it was a mistake putting Zorba in charge of recruiting our next conditioning coach...

I assume Matty mustn't have entirely snapped his ACL first time, and did it a minute after he'd returned to the field. Can't even walk with a freshly ruptured ACL.
