Are Newcastle the new NRL Charity case?

Just curious...why is that so and what purpose does in serve?
I think it's 95% and I'm guessing the reason is to stop clubs from not bothering to compete for a season and then amassing a huge war chest, which is somewhat ridiculous when you consider the inequity regarding third-party deals.

Well looks like it to me....apparently AFTER signing Pearce there still over 1.5 million to spend?
Without going through the roster of 2016, which was fair to say under the cap....they have had to upgrade Barnett, Fitzgibbon, Ross, Lamb and Levi - which they have openly come out and confessed.
On top of this have to pay WELL over's to secure players - between 20% to 50% is a fair (Estimate).....
They have secured Ese'ese who most clubs would have on their roster at decent money.
Moga also from Brisbane - same situation.
Griffin an up and comer from Melbourne who usually hold onto these players.
Heighnington and Lillyman who are old, but at least average NRL value.
Roosters SKD, Guerra, Watson & Pearce who would have been well overs....
Young Ponga - talented but a rookie at 1 million a season.
The kicker for me that shows just how ridiculous their overs are - Hodgkinson who is on $600,000 to play reserves there and lets face it - he should be a $300,000 player tops, in his battered, slow condition.
How they still manage to have an endless pit of money to spend after this spree is beyond me.
Your busted out on the first point - last season had 1.5 million leftover......we are now 1 season later and you have 4 million on this scaled down summary and allowing for the jump in salary cap - they are already over....having also claimed to have upgraded a heap of promising juniors.....where are all these $$'s
At least use a calculator before posting.

I might have neglected the calc, and the cost of the journeyman (last minute edit).
But the point remains, the Knights have $'s and a lot of cheapies on unders still.

Buying 1 marquee, 1 old discard, 1 ex drug user, 2 journeymen, and a rookie with potential is not nearly enough to presume they are now cheating a cap.

But please point me to an article where Ponga, a rookie 18 year old, is now a million dollar per annum fullback.
I recall quite clearly that he signed for 600K (dementia aside).

You don't pay a lot for a wooden spoon, and I hear that 3 in a row is even discounted.

Basically to try and make every team as competitive as possible, and as the NRL basically pays for all the players contracts by virtue of their grants to the clubs, they don't want clubs penny pinching on the salary cap, and trying to offset costs in administration or other non playing areas.

Your journey men are accurate
Ponga is only $600,000 year 1 but jumps each year x 3 by $200,000.
In reality I realise they maybe had plenty to spend for 2017....but must be on razors edge now - so when I hear the claims of still 1 million to spend....without an eyelid batted by the NRL - seems as seedy as Eels getting Radradra back mid year being remotely possible.

We have 800-850 to spend, and squad to squad, they will have 1-1.5 easily leftover.

The slime and hayne is another story.

Maybe they front loaded a lot of the contracts last year with the intention of spending big the year after? That could be a plausible explanation. Another plausible explanation is Greenslime. The possibilities are endless because of TPA's and brown paper bags.

What your saying right there makes 100% sense in relation to the squads worth - that’s my point - we are paying players their worth - Newcastle pay a big overs premium which more than balances out that difference.
It’s purely opinion but has been very evident players are getting far more money to play at the Knights than they would at another NRL team.
This has been acknowledged by coach Brown, that this is protocol to sign players there....and he may have a better idea than all of us on here.

What is with this outbreak of placing punctuation marks (full stops, commas, exclamation marks, etc.) about five marching paces behind the body of text?

OK, back to the conversation.
