The wash-up from Manly Sea Eagles members' forum
Manly is not for sale, the club won’t be relocating, John Cartwright will coach next year and Marty Taupau is going nowhere.
They were the key take-out points from a robust Sea Eagles members’ forum hosted by Manly owner Scott Penn and CEO Lyall Gorman at Manly Leagues Club on Wednesday night.
Attended by around 200 fans, Gorman and Penn fielded questions from the floor for around 90 minutes.
Penn was asked about rumours he intended relocating or selling the club and emphatically denied either proposal was on the table.
He also rejected claims international front-rower Taupau was up for sale, declaring he would be in Manly colours next year.
Both Penn and Gorman were circumspect over the coaching situation, saying they could not elaborate on Trent Barrett’s future due to legal constraints.
But Penn promised a ‘seamless’ transition in an indication Cartwright will step up from assistant to head coach, while Barrett sees out the remaining 10 months of his contract in a consultancy role.
Penn is unwilling to pay Barrett out and is effectively putting him on ‘gardening leave’ in one of the more bizarre coaching situations we’ve seen in rugby league.
It was also revealed premiership-winning hooker Matt Ballin was likely to join the coaching staff as head of strength and conditioning.
The future of Brookvale Oval was also canvassed, with Penn and Gorman revealing they were lobbying the state government for further funding to start building on a centre of excellence.
One member told Sporting News: “Gorman talks like a politician so we didn’t learn much there, but Penn seemed pretty genuine and upfront in his answers.
“He’s adamant he is going nowhere, the club is going nowhere and Taupau is going nowhere.
“Time will tell on all this.”
