Are Manly Sea Eagles moving or up for sale?

The wash-up from Manly Sea Eagles members' forum

Manly is not for sale, the club won’t be relocating, John Cartwright will coach next year and Marty Taupau is going nowhere.

They were the key take-out points from a robust Sea Eagles members’ forum hosted by Manly owner Scott Penn and CEO Lyall Gorman at Manly Leagues Club on Wednesday night.

Attended by around 200 fans, Gorman and Penn fielded questions from the floor for around 90 minutes.

Penn was asked about rumours he intended relocating or selling the club and emphatically denied either proposal was on the table.

He also rejected claims international front-rower Taupau was up for sale, declaring he would be in Manly colours next year.

Both Penn and Gorman were circumspect over the coaching situation, saying they could not elaborate on Trent Barrett’s future due to legal constraints.

But Penn promised a ‘seamless’ transition in an indication Cartwright will step up from assistant to head coach, while Barrett sees out the remaining 10 months of his contract in a consultancy role.

Penn is unwilling to pay Barrett out and is effectively putting him on ‘gardening leave’ in one of the more bizarre coaching situations we’ve seen in rugby league.

It was also revealed premiership-winning hooker Matt Ballin was likely to join the coaching staff as head of strength and conditioning.

The future of Brookvale Oval was also canvassed, with Penn and Gorman revealing they were lobbying the state government for further funding to start building on a centre of excellence.

One member told Sporting News: “Gorman talks like a politician so we didn’t learn much there, but Penn seemed pretty genuine and upfront in his answers.

“He’s adamant he is going nowhere, the club is going nowhere and Taupau is going nowhere.

“Time will tell on all this.”

This was a good summation of the meeting so I presume the reporter from Sporting News was in the audience.
The response regarding Matt Ballin wasn't as definitive as reported. I took notes and Lyall said: "We've had several discussions with Matt and he is part of the jig-saw".
It was be a great addition to our coaching staff if we could get Matt back.

I believe the club new Madge had turned them down before the meeting and didn't want to tell the crowd that Carty has the job.

I think ballin is a more important signing then maguire. We need to get fit! We're currently fat! Randall as one assistant. Ballin as head trainer. Then we need a specialist defencive coach as the extra assistant. Our biggest issues were defence and fitness. Ballin should fix one of those so we just need that defencive side fixed.

Don’t know what to make of it but I just heard that a wealthy Sydney businessman that is a Manly fan has put in an offer of $8m to buy the Sea Eagles off the Penns with the Penns still having a share in Manly.

I asked if was the URM group and he said no. I asked if it was Shaw and Partners whom I know are also big fans and he said no.

Is $8m too low for Manly??? I would think we would be worth more as we are awesome.

Depends how big a share 8 mill is. If 51% could be about right in terms of value.

if something like this was to eventuate , would certainly hope that it would be a more functional and harmonious model then the Quantum years . That old adage about having the front office in order for the rest of a club or organization to have good stability still rings true without doubt . General stability seems to be the case in the present Sea Eagles set up , both on and off the field so really would not be ideal to jeopardize that situation

Just heard The Christian alliance against unfair dismissal has started a go fund me page to buy an NRL club (Manly) so Izzy can still play footy. They have over 2 million so far IN 48 HOURS. Main question from me would be how could this be true. My answer is that it isn't as I just made that **** up.

We are awesome, but the bottom line is all about profit, we have never made one and probably never will, so it all depends on how much of the bleeding of cash the Penns want to prevent
