Annesley's weakly "why this happened" report

Honestly I think it's better he doesn't do them. The referee's are going to get some calls wrong, even with the technology it's going to happen. I think there needs to be a shift back to the referee's call with less reliance on technology personally, they're humans and can probably adjudicate better on the spot. The current system almost removes the on-field referees responsibility too, I don't think they should be instinctively refereeing a footy game with that in the back of their minds.

By all means use it for those crazy tries that are like 1mm from the sideline, foul play and other things that warrant it. But if the referee calls it a try, they've really gotta stop going over it with a magnifying glass looking for anything to intervene - those calls are straight up killers as a spectator, no matter which team you're supporting.

Agreed.
Also the captain's challenge has highlighted how many times players (and probably us fans) claim a call is wrong only for the ref to be proven correct. All replays should be in real time, you can find something wrong in just about every play if you watch it one frame at a time.

That is just how I feel too. I have a cynical suspicion that the apparent desire to be error-free across sports is mostly driven by gambling money. I don't like it. I'd be happy with your proposal.

Seems official....

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo has confirmed Graham Annesley’s weekly briefings have been axed in 2025, although the head of football is expected to still be available to discuss any major controversies that arise from the weekend’s action.

While the weekly meetings provided clarity on certain rulings, there was a fear that there was too much focus on the referees and that some decisions were simply a matter of opinion which didn’t sit well with fans.

It will be interesting to see how the media and fans deal with calls they don’t like this season if there’s no official word from the NRL.

“As part of the post season review in 2024, we decided that we do not require the regular Monday football briefings,” Abdo said in a statement seen by the News Wire.

“We will continue to update media, fans and clubs on significant football matters as required in the season.”

Maybe it was getting harder for Annesley to explain away both incompetence and more darkly, outcome management?
